Yep. And when Blair does pull the plug on Candle at the end of the season—and he’ll have to, there will be no option when this thing totally collapsed—not one assistant on this staff should be named as the next head coach. Not being mean-spirited; they just haven’t shown the body of work to make me believe they can get it done. No more “Mike O’Brien” laziness with coaching searches, please.
Still has another year after this season unless someone comes up with $1 million.
Didn’t we just get $1.8 million as our reward for getting dismantled by Ohio State? Football is what drives the athletic department budget. What kind of attendance do you think we’ll see at Homecoming? I bet it’s under 18,000. The BG game will probably have the lowest attendance in years. And the other 2 home games will be 14,000 each at best. So—could you spend that cool $1.8 million on a variety of sports at UT? Sure. But if you want to stop the bleeding & hope to have a sell-out in the Glass Bowl sometime in the next 3 seasons, the better play is to buy Candle out & hope you find someone who can build the football program back to a respectful level—and then the $$$ will follow again.

On this site, before the season begun, most posters were saying UT would be 2-2 at this point. Well, they fulfill that prediction. Onto the MAC and win next week against the Chips. Offensive line play can't get much worst, except for injuries.

You expect us to go 6-2 rest of the way and win the MAC? Bcunn is right. We’re winning 2-3 games the rest of the season

It’s not been the losing—it’s “HOW” we lose. This San Diego State team, this season, would struggle to have a winning season in the MAC. That who we just lost to. And again—it’s the “HOW”. Inept offense for 3 quarters combined with overall not great special teams play all game, followed by a total collapse on D in the last 3 minutes. And then there’s the coaching, but that’s been a constant for awhile now.

In this day and age it puzzles me how you can lose to a spread offensive team that passes for a whopping 65 yards.

Toledo’s defense made SDSU look silly on all but two drives. Hats off to Finn for a gutsy comeback after he got injured and for the rockets offense for toughing out two TDs in the 4th to take the lead. SDSU approached that last drive was understandably very different. They looked like a different team. Toledo almost got a fumble in the end but it was ruled down after the review. Regardless, a very good showing by the defense after OSU’s offensive onslaught last week. I hate leaving time on the clock, but Toledo’s D had been so tough. SDSU has some big defensive backs and a pretty tough defense. Disappointing loss. SDSUs punter should get the game ball. He was great.

All true. And we lost. I’m done accepting “near misses” and “moral victories” for $1 million a year anymore. I’m betting I’m not the only one.

RE: SDSU Game Thread
And, after Kent State gave #1 Georgia a good game, and Central Michigan hung in there with Penn State, Northern Illinois is now tied with #8 Kentucky at the half, 14-14.
Those are our next 3 games. Does anyone think this Rocket football team is at the level of any of those 3 right now?

You play tough against someone outside the conference, which could mean nothing inside MAC. I expect the Rockets to win at home against both CMU and Kent, to be at 4-2 when they play NIU.

I thought the buy out was like $400k
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I probably caused that misunderstanding when I had a bit of a brain blank out. The $400K is his buy out if he leaves early for another job. We fire him, he gets what's left on the contract. So, maybe we try to get Campbell to hire him when he goes to Nebraska.... Campbell has already said he has no interest in another job. Translation - "I'm gone when they offer the amount of cash I hear they are talking about.."

It seems to me that the longer Candle coaches these guys the worse they play. We just keep falling back on our heals. And when that happens it’s next to impossible to move forward.

RE: SDSU Game Thread
We've discussed Candle's contract here before, his buyout, if fired without cause, is $700K per year, not the full value of his contract. That money is reduced, if he gets another job (in football) before Dec 2023, by whatever his salary is in the new job.
In '23 he is scheduled to make $1.225M ($575K salary, plus $650K marketing compensation) plus any performance bonuses he might earn. So, one could argue, that if you let him go at the end of the year, and bring in a new coach at somewhere around $500K total in their 1st year, that it would be pretty much a wash, and maybe even a savings if the new coach doesn't start til several months into the year. So, not sure cost is that big of an issue to let him go this year, unless the university is wanting to find someone else to take $1M plus of its money.

RE: SDSU Game Thread
We have to face the reality that at $1M JC was the #72 highest paid HC in D1 the last time the data was looked at. Talking of getting someone for $500 K is putting us in the last tier of D1 schools. We are going to have to go to the elite few $$ folks to solve this problem.
I am guessing that this will happen this year. AD Blair does not have the luxury of time getting the mind set of the fans back in gear and in the stands. This talk of us being good enough to compete in the MAC is delusional. This is a program that is loosing speed and following. Nothing special at all about what they showed as a staff during this game. As a previous HC once said,"Never hire your friends"........

Salaries in 2022
Hammock $530K
Lewis $480K
Creighton $475K
Sure seems like one can get an equal or better coach than Candle for less than half the salary.
