Temple Owls VS. Rutgers Scarlet Knights
SEPT. 17 2:00 PM ET, Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, PA

Streaming:ESPN+

Line: Rutgers -18
O/U: 44.5

All Time Series Record: Temple 15 - 21 Rutgers.
Winspedia Link

Rutgers has won the last 5 contests, including a brutal 61-14 drubbing last season. Temple had kept the game close into the 3rd quarter and trailed 26-14 after a D'Wan Mathis TD run, but Rutgers then scored 35 unanswered points to make it out a rout.

Game Preview: Philadelphia Inquirer: Rutgers Tries to Beat Temple for 6th Straight Time
Game Preview: College Football News: Rutgers vs Temple Game Preview and Prediction

Temple has looked mostly terrible for the first two games of the season, getting blanked 30-0 by Duke and then needing to block 3 punts last week to finally put away middling FCS team Lafayette. Rutgers has started 2-0 after scoring a close win vs BC and a blowout of FCS Wagner, but hasn't looked particularly impressive overall and again don't look to be competitive in conference play. Temple's offense looked significantly more capable last week after EJ Warner took over for D'Wan Mathis at QB, and EJ will get the start against Rutgers. This should be a good measuring stick game for Temple to show whether they will start to grow more competitive as the season progresses or if they're likely to maintain their spot as one of FBS' worst teams.

I don’t know that I’ve ever heard of a team blocking 3 punts in a game at any level. I’m sure it’s not a first, but, wow!

Not only that, it was one player with 3 blocks! Even still not a record.

Unfortunately, I do not see a competitive game for Temple this week. The previous HC, Rod Carey, was a terrible recruiter, and his management style of playing favorites and bad game planning, game day coaching and player development coincided with the open transfer portal resulting in the loss of many skilled and experienced upperclassmen. My hope is to avoid a blowout loss.

That reminds me that around 15 years ago (last time we shared a conference with them) SMU had a dude who probably averaged one placekick block per game and had more than one game with multiples. Truly outstanding athlete. I was happy he only got us once when we played them that year.

Summary:

Temple is ahead 7-3 in the 2nd q.

The Owls come up with a big defensive sack. Rutgers will have to punt from their 10 yard line. Temple has played a fairly good field position game thus far, has held Rutgers to only one first down so far. The Owls have 7 and lead in yds gained, 122-51.

RE: ***Official Rutgers @ Temple Game Thread***
Temple's running game needs to improve. They've averaged 3.1 yards per rush so far.

Wow - Q. Patterson has made some key plays, with a TD and a key 1st down at midfield, the second time the Owls converted on a 4th down play.

But the first turnover of the day costs Temple big-time. Warner will have to tighten up on his passing reads and put more zip on the ball. Rutgers now up 10-7.

Temple's going to have trouble if they can't get more rushing yardage. Warner's passing has lacked "zip" all day, and he's thrown some near interceptions.

Rutgers is defending well against the run. 3 and out.

Temple has kept it pretty close so far and has a lot more first downs than RU has, which is better than many would have expected.

If it wasn't for that interception, Temple would probably be ahead. 4:09 to go, 1st half

Temple gambled and lost, trying to convert another 4th down situation.

Looks like Rutgers will score again. The Owls could be down by two scores going into halftime. Too bad, because they've generally outplayed Rutgers most of the way, so far.

.

If we're comparing Drayton to Coach Golden and Coach Rhule as far as team poise and execution/play-calling are concerned, I believe Drayton compares favorably, because those two guys were absolute nincompoops/incompetent in their first season as game coaches.

The major criticism of Drayton, in my view, is the excessive number of penalties on offense.

Temple's D did an outstanding job vs. a P5 team in the first half, holding them to only 2 first downs and 91 offensive yards.

Good news, Rut Ro missed a 38 yd FG!

Still 7-10 at the half

If Temple pulls the upset we lose our positioning in the Bottom Ten.

Saydee's only averaging 2 yards per carry. That isn't going to get it done against a P5 team.

Temple needs a better running back, or they're going to lose this game.

One of Temple's main problems today is that they are playing without 1 or 2 of their best running backs. Just one good RB, and Temple would be able to beat Rutgers.
