I actually had someone tell me that in a job interview. You don’t get movie quotes from people looking for a job often enough.

I asked “tell me why you think you are the best candidate for this position?” And that was his response. Naturally, he got the job.

Ugh. I’d have sent that dude packing.

I’m at the point in my career where a job interview is as much me interviewing them as them interviewing me. Why am I the best candidate for the job? Well, why are you the best employer for me?

I find it hilarious how un-creative the hiring process can be. The same damn questions everywhere you go.

Interviewer: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Applicant: Dude I'm a 2 months from missing my mortgage... I just need a damn job!

What did you make at your last job?

Usually inappropriate jokes and coffee as I always seemed to get the last cup..

True story.

We had a company coming to campus when I was in college hiring interns/graduates.. They were requiring you to have at least a 3.2 GPA and/or a recommendation from an employee/former intern/faculty.

I had a 3.0 but decided not to apply. One of the faculty heard and tracked me down and told me to apply he would give me a recommendation. Little did I know a buddy that went to work for them had put me on the list, and another that had interned had recommended me as well.

Anyway.. Fast forward, I go to the interview. Ahead of me was this guy that was going for an internship. Kid had a 4.0. This kid never would have lunch or beer with us. We get out of class he'd go to a library and study or go to his car and eat a lunch he packed and study.

So anyway he gets called back. He's back there for like 10 minutes comes back to the room and is devastated.. I was like dude, you ok? He said they don't want me. I was all of a sudden nervous. I said what do you mean they don't want you? Basically it boiled down that they were concerned that he a perfect GPA and had since HS and may buckle under pressure if he failed.

One of the interviews stopped by the room and let me know they'll be ready for me in a few minutes.

At that point I told the guy hey don't worry about it. Shake it off. There's a fit out there, you're gonna be ok. Don't let it bring you down. There's tons of other companies out there.

A few minutes later I was called back. They had my transcripts. My resume. The recommendations.

I sat down and the first question/statement was: Tell us a little about yourself.

I unbutton my suit jacket and said:

Well my name is XXXXX. I grew up in a small town called Bogue Chitto and graduated from the high school that bears the name of the town.

I went to Copiah Lincoln Community College and got my associates before coming to USM.

I've been working at XXX and on campus at XXX. I'm looking for an internship for the summer that could turn into fulltime employment come January after I graduate in December.

And since you're looking at my transcripts you know I didn't meet the 3.2 GPA requirement and that's because I've failed a few times in my life and ain't scared to do it again, but will bust my tail to make sure any failures I've experienced don't happen again.

One of the interviewers giggled. The others smiled.. The lead guy grinning said, you talked to the guy ahead of you didn't you.

Yes sir, he was quite distraught and I was more concerned about him than what was said and he told me. Figured I'd use it to my advantage.

Then they told me about the 3 recommendations, which I knew of one (the faculty). Told me what they were looking for.

An hour later they told me they would be in touch. But they were sold on me for an internship.

They offered. I declined, I had a better offer.
