GAME THREAD: CCU vs Buffalo 9/17 1pm est
Thoughts on the last game:
We won a game that we had absolutely no business winning. The end.
Famous Alumni:
Khalil Mack, Wolf Blitzer, Ita Flatow, and John Walsh
Preview:
Buffalo was picked to finish 3rd in the East Division of the MAC and sixth overall just ahead of Ohio. I could not find Preseason All-Conference info on the MAC site so I am not sure how reliable this is, but according to Athlon….DL Daymond Williams and LB James Patterson were named 1st Team Preseason All-Conference. WR Quian Williams, OL Gabe Wallace, DL Max Michel, and KR Ron Cook were named 3rd Team Preseason All-Conference. The 4th team All-Conference (who knew it went that deep) RB Ron Cook, DL George Wolo, S Jahmin Muse, and K Alex McNulty.
Last year they went 4-8 overall and 2-6 in the MAC.
Local Ties:
The only local player is Freshman DT Ja’Mori Coard from Crestwood, SC (Crestwood).
Past History with the team and Conference:
We played Buffalo last year for the first time ever. It was not our best effort but we escaped NY with a 28-25 win. McCall threw for 232, 3TDs and 1INT but was also sacked 3 times. Shermari destroyed them on the ground for 145 and 1TD.
Common Opponents from last year:
Last year we both played Northern Illinois. We beat them in the Cure Bowl 47-41 and Buffalo lost to them in OT 33-27 at home.
Offensive Player of the Game:
Last week I thought it would be McCall and I think he gets it. He went 22/30 for 308yds, 2TD and 1INT.
This week I think it will be Grayson again because the two teams we have played so far have tried to completely stop our run game and I assume Buffalo will be no different. I think McCall goes 24/31 for 322yds 3TDs and 4 rushes for 22yds.
Defensive Player of the Game:
Last week I went with Josaiah, but it definitely has to go to Lance Boykin with his 2 huge INTs. He also had 6 total tackles.
This week I think it will be Shane Bruce. I can see him getting 10 tackles and 1.5 TFLs.
Special Teams Player of the Game:
Last week I went with Hensley but it absolutely goes to McDoom with his 95yd kickoff return.
This week I think it will be Hensley. I think he will put 5/6 kickoffs into the endzone or fair caught.
Random:
It is interesting how sports can play many different roles in our lives. Growing up I played baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer and golf. I loved any and all sports. It was fun to me and I would do it 24/7 if my parents allowed me to. I also remember growing up I would have to go to bed before the Bulls or White Sox west coast games would end. My Dad would leave me a note in the morning telling me who won, but sports was everything to me. I would say my prayers before going to sleep and I can remember saying “…God please let the Bulls/White Sox beat ____...” As I have gotten older, and hopefully more mature, I still play golf, basketball and softball, have realized that God doesn’t care who wins a game and that there is more to life than sports lol. Now don’t misunderstand that; when Coastal loses at something I am still miserable most of the day lol. I also absolutely love the MLB app on my phone. I have trouble sleeping, but listening to a west coast game late at night helps me fall asleep in no time. It’s a great sleep aid!
Fast forward to last Saturday’s game…my son and I go to the game and we have seats in the upper deck of the family section, but he likes sitting in the corner of the upper deck in Section 307 because there’s more space for him to roam. We are sitting there and watching Coastal’s opening possession when my son hears my phone ring. My wife was at a surprise Birthday party for her Aunt and she was calling me. I answer the phone and it wasn’t her voice. I immediately knew something was wrong. Long story short, they had to call EMS for her to be taken to the hospital so my son and I rushed out of the stadium hopped on a golf cart to the HH lot and headed out. Earlier I mentioned how as I got older that I have realized sports is not everything. When I was driving to take my son to his grandmother’s he was in tears worried about mommy – totally understandable especially after her knee fiasco 18 months ago - but sports is everything to him right now. I turned the game on the radio and he calmed down and was listening to the game and asking some questions. Once I got to the hospital the game was the furthest thing from my mind. After I saw my wife, saw she was going to be ok etc I turned the game on my phone and caught the last 5 minutes of the 3rd quarter and some of the 4th. I found it interesting that sports role was calming our son down and providing a distraction to him (probably how I would have been when I was 6yo).
Prediction:
Since our offense and defense have not been on their A games yet….
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 27 Buffalo Bulls 17
