The only key question is, were there any injuries? If not, then today was a huge success.
Don’t care about the score or individual performance against a FCS doormat.
Hmmm. Let’s take stock after week two.
Last week Marshall rolled NSU 55-7, and today beat a top 10 ranked Notre Dame.
Today JMU beats NSU 63-7, and MTSU (last week’s opponent) went on the road and smoked Colorado State 34-19.
So, are there any insights we can glean from this small data set?
Well, for starters Norfolk can’t compete with FBS teams.
Second, Marshall and JMU beat the Spartans by equivalent scores.
Third, Marshall appears to be a very solid team, and proved it by going on the road and beating a ranked team.
Fourth, MTSU appears to be a better team than the team JMU emasculated last week.
Fifth, Notre Dame may be an imposter this season.
Do any of these observations (such as the similar scores against NSU by Marshall and JMU) mean Marshall and JMU are equivalent teams?
It should be obvious that Marshall must be a pretty darn good team this year. Weak teams don’t go into South Bend, IN and beat Notre Dame.
Marshall also deservedly got a lot of praise last week for blowing out NSU.
Does JMU deserve equal (or more) praise for blowing out NSU by an even larger margin?
Does MTSU’s big win over Colorado State make JMU’s blowout win over MTSU more impressive?
The answers may have to wait until Marshall plays JMU, but right now it appears the SBC East is loaded with some very strong teams, and some of those teams should be getting votes for the top 25. The SBC has earned them.
