RE: TV coverage: Godwin side
On JMU stats, season, game by game, it lists the game durations on one page for every game. Skimming back to 2016:

Longest games:
4:00 2019 Morgan St (was there a lightning delay?)
3:51 2021 Morehead St (was there a lightning delay?)
3:31 2017 NSU (75-14)
3:29 2017 Weber St (quarterfinals ESPN)
3:27 2021 @ SHSU (semifinals ESPN)
3:25 2016 SHSU (quarterfinals ESPN)
3:25 2022 MTSU (ESPN)

Shortest:
2:30 2021 @ RU
2:34 2018 @ VU

Maybe the above mentioned 2017 @ URI game was shorter, but it is the only game the last 6 seasons with no time listed for it. The days of the games between 2 1/2 to under 3 hours (which were over half the games in the past) are probably over..

That damn App State game was over four hours on Saturday. Lots of touchdowns means lots of longer stoppages.

I don't know why I remember this so vividly, but that D2 Bloomsburg game we played in the mid-00s was crazy short. No TV. Low scoring. Lots of rushing with little passing. It probably wasn't much more than two hours.

Looking the 2016-2022 seasons, at the 24 (might have missed 1 or 2) ESPN 2/U/3/+ games (20 playoff, @ ECU, @ NC State, @ Weber, MTSU) 17 were between 3:00 and 3:29, with the 4 longest mentioned 3 posts above. (2021 @ Weber stats were jacked up, saying the game was 15 hrs/48 min and didn't end till the next morning lol) The only 5 under 3 hours:
2:57 2019 quarterfinals UNI
2:55 2018 @ Colgate
2:55 2021 spring quarterfinals N Dakota
2:53 2019 semis Weber
2:49 2021 semis @ NDSU (running clock 03-pissed )
Avg of the 2 doz ESPN games was about 3:09 hrs. Don't think the ones televised on other networks averaged less. Maybe a few minutes.

Looking at non televised games (linear or streaming), count 13 between 2016-2019. Last non televised home game was 2017 UNH. Avg was 2:54. Only 1 not under 3 hours, 2016 Morehead St at 3:10, but that was an 80-7 game.

Ironically the 2 shortest games over the last 6 seasons, listed 3 posts above, were listed as televised. 2021 @ RU, (2:30, NBC Sports Washington), and 2018 @ VU (2:34, Fox College Sports).

So the last 6 seasons the JMU ESPN televised have avg 3:09 hrs, non televised 2:54 hrs. I would have thought the difference would have been bigger than 15 min.

Thanks,03-thumbsup but this won't be every week & more on the occasional non game threads like this. Thought with the move up was a good time to retire from starting game threads (over the past several years I wasn't the only one but had probably started more than anyone else). Too many others on here who have followed the SBC & G5 for years, who have more knowledge and interest in the detailed SBC/G5 opponent analysis..

There seems to be a timeout just about every play stoppage which is one of the reason why games take so long (especially in baseball) But that is what pays the freight so we are stuck with em I guess.

One of the quickest JMU football games the wife and I were at was at Rhode Island a couple years back, maybe 17 or 18. 12 noon start and there was no TV even local coverage. Game just ran and was done in 2 hours. Was nice not stopping every couple of minutes to sell some product.

Last game they agreed to speed up the clock by trimming 5 minutes off. And it seemed the game just drug after that due to tv timeouts. A couple of times they went to tv timeout to come back for 1 play and then another tv timeout.
