Would the SEC leave ESPN if Jeff Bezos & Amazon bought Disney??
Since we have been talking about TV corporations and college sports conferences, I figured this was relevant.

SEC is contractually bound to Disney, or to Disney a division of Amazon Global, until 2034 or so.

After 2034, if Amazon owns Disney ESPN, I don't see where the SEC goes instead. There's no competition--OTA tv and cable will be dinosaurs by then.

03-weeping That is my nightmare scenario for the SEC and I can see Bezos doing it too, because he gives off a "Cartman" vibe, IMO ("Respect my authoriton!!!/Southpark) I do think there would be competition, just a different type. Streaming will probably have all of its bugs worked out by then. OTA would be old, but if it hasn't left now, I don't see it leaving in the future. Now cable could very well be gone by then. I see streaming as the "new" cable though.

I already stream most of my tv shows on my tv haha, I’m sure a lot of cord cutters do that these days. But cable and the big networks will remain relevant indefinitely, there just so much inertia they’ve built up and most people are reluctant to embrace change.

Don’t worry about bezos, he’ll be on mars with musk by 2034.

Didn't he just lose half his assets to his ex? Couldn't afford it.

It depends on the contract as there could be a right for a party to terminate in the event that there is a change in ownership of the other party.

That would be really unusual for a TV contract, though. (It's a common term in a lot of other industries.)

In any event, I don't really understand where the OP is coming from here. Are we saying that the SEC leaders would somehow have personal disagreements with Jeff Bezos? I know the Big Ten leadership pretty much disagrees with almost everything with Rupert Murdoch on a personal level, but that clearly had no bearing on their deep relationship with FOX.

RE: Would the SEC leave ESPN if Jeff Bezos & Amazon bought Disney??
Media companies are bought and sold all the time. Bundled and repackaged with other offerings.

If Amazon buys Disney/ESPN it will be because they want them in their bundle. SEC football is clearly a significant part of ESPN's offerings, and locked down for the next 12 years. That would obviously be a component any buyer would want, and would be a prime mover for Amazon.

There will be ownership changes for most of the media we now consume. You cannot predict much. I do know that Microsoft and Netflix are increasingly intertwined at the managerial level with rampant internal rumors that a buyout is inevitable. But does Microsoft have a media strategy or do they still see things as growing from their gaming empire? Companies like Apple and Meta definitely have media ambitions and enough cash on hand to buy out all the networks a few times over. Apple especially is almost forced at some point to buy a legacy media company (be it Disney, Paramount, NBC or FOX) to realize their streaming plans. Alphabet for now seems to be content on replacing cable companies with their offerings (e.g., GoogleTV), leading me to believe their next moves are more likely in the cable/telco space to hasten home transitions to streaming.

It's coming for sure. You have these ambitious tech companies on the west coast with insane amounts of cash in search of content, and then all these content owners in legacy media companies (studios, TV/Cable) who are cash strapped. It doesn't take a genius to see what's coming in this space.

Look at these R&D budgets (revenue tends to be several multiples of this) to get a rough handle on how much more cash these guys have, and how much they can throw at media in a whim.

Half his assets is still $100B. He's doing just fine.
