I know it's assumed in all of this, but UCF is a perfect example of why "bowl appearances" is less helpful than "winning seasons" or even ".500 or above seasons."
Because UCF had at least one 9-2 team that didn't go to a bowl simply because they weren't in a conference and there weren't as many bowls to go around.

As I mentioned in a previous post, this was not intended to be "helpful" for realignment considerations or any other reason. Just diving into the data. It's interesting, for example, that Appalachian St has been to a bowl in all 7 years they have been bowl-eligible.

It is worth mentioning if you are comparing conferences that from 1922-1945 no B1G team was allowed to go to a bowl game (and many would have). Then only one could go until early 70's
And Notre Dame didn't play in bowl games for many years as well. So these lists aren't very meaningful. It would be interesting to see the data for the past 50 years only.
There’s lots of reasons these lists aren’t “meaningful.” It’s not intended to prove anything or reach a conclusion. Just laying out the numbers. I find them interesting.
I did too. It was nice to see a list of bowl appearances by various schools. Thanks.

Yeah, I saw that.
Totally fair. If you want to see number of bowls, the numbers are the numbers.
Just adding to the context.

I don't think 1898 is within the last 50 years.

You do know that we've only been allowed to go to bowl games for 7 years, right? We've never missed a bowl game, and won 6 of those 7.
A better post would be comparing bowl appearances over the last 5 years, or the last 10 years. The further back in time you go, the less relevant this data becomes.
Still only have 7 bowls. Not intended to “shame” y’all.
I'll take "only" 7 bowls in our 7 years, especially since 6 of them were wins.
I guess maybe if we went to 11 bowls in 7 years, that would be more impressive.

I counted them, since the bowls are integrated with the CFP. Where I had to make a judgement call is how to count the national championship game. I opted to measure the number of seasons in which a team appeared in a bowl, as opposed to the number of games they played. So the finalists in the four team CFP era only got credit for one "appearance" in those years.
