Convocation Center
I saw this picture online today. Anybody know if there are stands on both sides of the volleyball court? Or did they rip out the lower bowl on the side where the basketball team benches used to be?

I would say there are stands on both sides.
Plus, when you see the court, the seats are facing the JMU logo upside down, so it wouldn't make much sense to have no bleachers facing the "JMU" logo right side up.

This vantage point is from above the bleachers on the main level, you just can’t see them in this rendering. You can see the stairs on the right, it’s just like it is on the other side of the court.

Skinny M makes an appearance in the rendering!

This might be one of the most underrated capital projects for athletics, the Convo reno will be a huge support upgrade.

I wish there is money in the budget to fix the real problem with the Convo (the outside facade). Its like they didn't know if they wanted to be mid-century, modern or brutilist so they just took the worst elements of all three and combined them. It is one of the fugliest buildings I've ever seen (and living in DC there are some real fuglies in the brutilist style)

Really? I don’t have a problem with the Convo’s exterior. It’s well situated into the landscape, and with a low profile the structure is hardly an eyesore. It was the interior that was a complete disaster. Glad it’s being repurposed.

To each their own I suppose.

Does anyone recall when the renovations to the Convo are scheduled to be completed? I can not seem to remember.

yeah I'm just not a fan of Brutilism...HUD HQ in L'Enfant is possibly the ugliest building not built by the Soviets in the world. The only Brutalist design I'm a fan of is Metro but that is probably because that architecture style is suited to being underground.

I agree with the inside of Convo being a problem too...it was just one big giant turd of a building if you ask me.

I believe Volleyball folks have said they will play their 2023 season in the renovated space in Convo.

Brian

also, anyone know what else will be housed in the convo? Awfully big building for only volleyball. I assume indoor track will still use it, maybe some other offices or workout areas??

Seven sports under one roof.

Quote:The Convo renovation will transform the structure of over 110,000 square feet into the new varsity competition space for volleyball (capacity 900, possibly expandable to 1,300), with an alternate configuration for three practice courts, as well as training space for indoor track & field. In addition, the Convo will be outfitted with locker rooms, coaches' offices, academic advising, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, equipment services and meeting rooms for the sports of cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, men's soccer, women's soccer, volleyball and track & field.
