Awesome video. Glad the yellow didn't stick with our color combos. They also tried silver back in the day and then dark green. Now they're trying black LOL.

The silver was Chaump. He coached under Woody at OSU.

I went to school with the twins at St. Joe and took one of them to Jr. Prom before they left for Navy. Then visited them the summer of my senior year with a good friend of mine. we stayed with the Chaump family and had such a fantastic week. A week of my life that i will hold so dear.

I liked the gold, but I, like you, am glad that didn't stick. I liked the silver too, but, same.

I do like the black and hope it sticks.

That's a great story. I actually liked the silver. My ex-brother in-law was the kicker for Marshall when we had the silver helmets. His senior year was our first National Championship game in Pocatello Idaho. I remember watching that game in The Varsity.

Those uniforms, wow... Was yellow actually an official color of Marshall or is like how black is now? It would really be something to see a throwback, 80s night themed game with that color combo.

What's with the lack of fans in the stands? I was told by numerous old timers that people today are too focused on their phones, have no pride, and how back in their day every game was a sellout.

They exaggerate or have their memories of the homecoming games that WERE sellouts. Many times, the home side and the soutern end zone was packed. Fairfield wasn't the epitome of luxury. I think after the east stands were torn down the capacity reduced to about 11K, then increased back to around 16K when the aluminum bleachers were installed during the final years of Fairfield. Remember, we were still losing to VMI, UTC, The Citadel, and WCU when Sonny coached.

Sonny started the whole revitalization and resurrection of Marshall football from the ashes to the glory. He never gets enough credit. Don't get me wrong, Stan Parrish came in and pick up the ball and ran with it and got us to our first winning season in 1985 in nearly 20 years. Then George Chaump got us to the stairs of the promised land, then Donnan Delivered.

The gold? Yeah, I don't know where that came from or why it was approved. Knowing Sonny, he did it on the down low to surprise everyone.

If some of you remember, back in the early Huckaby days, our basketball uniforms had dark and light green trim. It isn't just football.

I mean, Marshall has ALWAYS had a proud and somewhat arrogant fanbase, misplaced though it might have been. The old guard was fantastic at holding grudges and passed that hatred down to their kids. After we were relegated to 1-AA and joined the SOCON, we went from playing 1-A schools to playing seven games against:

VMI
Western Carolina
Appalachian State
UT-Chattanooga
ETSU
Furman
The Citadel
(Davidson didn't have football and GaSo was Indy at this time)

Not exactly murderers row. But I'll tell you this. Prindle and Wilson Fields were PACKED with tailgaters.
