If college football breaks off from the rest of the NCAA...
each sport should be run by a separate organization:
The NCAA should run men's and women's basketball only.
At this point, it can keep three divisions or split into 4-5 divisions.
The USSF should run college soccer.
USA Hockey should run college hockey.
USA Baseball should run college baseball.
Tennis and golf could be run by the U.S. IOC.
This in my opinion would allow schools to pick which sports they value and leave the rest to club status.
It would also mean that realignment moves in football have no effect on any other sport.

I think we should have the sports run by sponsors and let them be title sponsors of each league.
We could have the Sun Drop D1 Soccer League, the D1 Target Tennis League, the TopGolf Collegiate Golf League, and the Five Guys Football League.
I am sorry.
I couldn’t resist.

It's not like those National Governing Bodies under the USOPC (formerly USOC) and the USOPC itself have been better than the NCAA at doing their own job.
Looking at USA Gymnastics, USA Swimming, USA Hockey, USA Diving, USA Track & Field, Figure Skating, and US Soccer to recall scandals from memory.
They're individually not as good as putting on the spectial of the championships too.

There are 774 college football teams in the NCAA. Who manages them?

Why do they need to be managed?

On the contrary. They should run everything but football, basketball and baseball/softball.

Because the OP says college football breakaway, and technically that would include Division 2 and Division 3. You can't leave Wisconsin-Whitewater in the cold.

Well in all seriousness, this is what the Knight Commission suggested after an extensive review of college athletics over a year ago.

The OP didn't say a P5 breakaway, or an FBS breakaway or a D-I breakaway. Why can't they just manage themselves the same way those schools would?
