1-on-1 with Jim Phillips: What's next for the ACC?
The ACC is exploring avenues to close the revenue gap with the Big Ten and SEC, and commissioner Jim Phillips believes it can be done with the support of his 15 universities.

247Sports: The feedback in the media after your speech at ACC Media Days has mostly been negative. What's your take on the reaction and how do you see the ACC moving forward amid all of this uncertainty in college athletics?

Phillips: The ACC has been one of the leading conferences in the country for 69 years in any metrics that you look at. Competing for national championships. We've been in the playoff eight of the nine years. We won seven national championships, which I believe is as many as any conference won this past year. Top 20 teams across the board are littered with ACC programs. So, there's no question we're doing and having success from a competitive standpoint. Academically, I think our conference has shown that we're performing well in the classroom — GSR, APR scores. And then the other piece of the experience for our kids is the community service and social justice. They're knocking it out of the park. We're competing at the very highest level against the very best competition.

We have a revenue issue. We have a revenue gap between us and other conferences, so that has to be addressed. That's what we're in the middle of. That's what we've been doing. A year ago I faced the same questions about distribution with Comcast and we weren't generating the kind of money for the (ACC) Network because we had 23 million folks that couldn't get the ACC Network, etc. This year, we're facing even more significant financial issues. We have some really good options moving ahead, and we're studying those and looking at those.

That was a heaping pile of nothing. The real question is, "How do we get better at football in the NIL era?" Expansion may add a few dollars but it's not going to get us close enough.

Quote:It’s important to note that UM is not unhappy in the ACC and is not looking to leave. But as one Trustee said, the Canes wish the TV revenue disparity between the ACC and the Big 10 and SEC wasn’t so wide.
