Oberlin College has refused to pay its $36million damages to Gibson Donuts
Now they have to pay another $4million on top of that.
A woke Ohio college now faces paying $4 million in interest on top of $36 million in damages to a family-run bakery it almost destroyed with false racism allegations.
Oberlin College was last month told it must pay the additional fee - equivalent to around $4,000-a-day for each of the 1,000 days it has refused to pony up - to Gibson's Bakery, The Chronicle reported.
Oberlin College led by one of its disgraced ex-deans, Meredith Raimondo, lied that the bakery's staff had racially-profiled three black students in 2016, despite the trio later admitting shoplifting.
That sparked a boycott and protests - led by a bullhorn-waving Raimondo - that almost destroyed Gibson's, who successfully won a defamation payout in 2019.
But Oberlin has refused to pay up, and asked for another stay in paying the Gibsons what they're owed because of a pending appeal against the ruling against them.
That appeal is set to be heard by the Ohio Supreme Court, after two lower courts rejected Oberlin's attempts to slither out of paying the Gibsons.

I put this squarely on the College Professors. Nothing more than instigators. I also blame the police for allowing this to continue to escalate. Someone should have put an end to this from the beginning.
If they don’t want to pay, cutoff any federal or state funding. Also don’t allow student loans to go there. Hit them where it hurts. Their pocketbook. Just freeze their assets like they do companies.
They should have to pay every red cent. When you decide you are the juror and the judge you accept responsibility for your actions.

This is Gibson's Donuts in Oberlin OH. Not Memphis. I don't think they are related.
The one in Oberlin is owned by a Gibson family. The one in Memphis is owned by Don DeWeese, who I think purchased it from a Gibson years ago, IIRC.
Anyway, I agree the Memphis donuts are great.

RE: Oberlin College has refused to pay its $36million damages to Gibson Donuts
Reminder: the initial conflict occurred in November 2016, nearly six years ago. The lawsuit was filed in 2017 and the initial jury verdict ($11m in compensatory damages) was handed down in June 2019, just over three years ago.
Around the time of the jury verdict, I read that a big problem for Oberlin is the fact that the jury found their actions to be intentional. That means that Oberlin’s insurance co. does *Not* have to help them on the judgment, which includes Gibson’s attorney fees, which are somewhere north of $7m. Which means that every penny is coming directly out of Oberlin’s pocket. Not to mention that Oberlin has to (or already had to) pay its own lawyers, too.
Nobody seriously thinks Oberlin will be bankrupted by this, but still… $40-41m is a big check to write.
By the way, there was one particular administrator at Oberlin who played a huge role in antagonizing the bakery, urging the college to play hard ball in negotiations, etc. She no longer works at Oberlin, but instead has a similar job at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. So, Oberlin is getting hosed on this, but it all worked out for her.

Maybe Oberlin’’s BOR should do a better job on making employees accountable. If I let my dog run loose he bites folks it’s on me.
Lack of accountability is killing this country. Maybe the fools should have reached a settlement to lessen the blow. They didn’t and here they are.

By the way, the Ohio Supreme Court does not have to hear this case at all. They can just say “Judgment Affirmed” and move on to the next docket. We’ll see.

Correct, this joint is named Gibson’s Food Mart & Bakery in Oberlin, Ohio. No relation to the place in Memphis.

Best.Donuts.Ever. At least in Memphis they are. The snake oil salesman ex coach of ours used to hang out there regularly.
