let the market dictate the cost of labor.

We have that today and what we are seeing is job jumping and to compete the profits will have to comedown from the top. I see all the complaining about the bottom not worth what they are being paid. Well, lets get real, most likely that middle and top really isnt either.

For a very long time the numbers were the other way around with record or at the very least higher profits at the top. It had gotten so bad that you could no longer raise a family on a labors pay. That wasnt the case 40 years ago or at least not as bad as the past 20 years.

You pay that person at the bottom or today they walk across the street for $2 an hour more. Today they dont have to take the bullshite of some overpaid "boss" talking like a dog to them. Everyone that moves up the ladder believes they are the most important. Without that bottom level....

you're not getting paid.

When I first started out I made three goals...
1. to do the best work in the city
2. my word was as good as gold
3. pay a livable and fair wage

Couldnt do #1 without #3 and I believe I lived up to all three...made less money overall for the first 15 to 20 years but caught up on the back end and had a very low turnover rate in workers.

Lot of bad, lazy workers, at the bottom end but just as many right about them, making more money

This is not the case in Southeast Texas. Mainly because there are miles and miles of Petroleum Chemical Plants.

To your point, Everyone from the bottom to the top are overpaid. Period. I am sure your points resonate with most around the country. My overall experience has shown me regardless what folks are paid doesn’t mean you will get your bang for the buck. Work ethic is sorely lacking with this younger generation. People that are valuable workers are seldom at the bottom because as you well know they are making the company money therefore they are being paid. My grand dad would always say if you are not making the company money they don’t need you.

My daughter could’ve laid around during the pandemic and made more money. I told her to keep working make less money now and it will all come out in the wash.

As things started easing up a headhunter from a Billion dollar company made her an offer for $30k more a year. Senior Accountant/ Assistant Controller all at the age of 24.

By the way, just wait until someone finds out which states are creating all of the jobs.

This is one of the largest underlying issues; you still have states where businesses simply cant/wont hire, and where people simply wont work.

However, job creation in red states is really strong at the moment.

June Jobs Report Shows Gains of 372,000, April and May Reports Revised Downward by 74,000

Quote:The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has released the June jobs report [Data Here] showing 372,000 job gains on the establishment survey of businesses. However, the April and May reports were revised downward by 74,000 jobs, and there is an odd disconnect between the survey of businesses and the survey of households.

The survey of businesses (BLS establishment report) shows job gains of 372k for the month of June, but the survey of households (BLS household report) shows that fewer people are working. The labor-force participation rate slipped to 62.2% from a previous high of 62.4%, fewer people are working.

This odd disconnect has many people wondering what is going on?

Wage growth comes in at 5.1% on an annual basis, which is far below the current BLS calculated rate of inflation at 8.6%. Meaning wage growth is not keeping up with inflation despite workers entering the labor force at a higher entry level wage.

Economists overall are flummoxed as job gains would indicate a strong economy. However, the actual economic activity, the creation of goods and services, is not growing. Quite the opposite appears. Orders for factory goods have dropped, inventories of currently available goods are climbing, and sales figures across a broad spectrum of companies are negative. The economy as measured by the creation of goods and services is stalled, but the economy as a measure of employment is firm.

Table B-1 of the BLS report shows where the jobs gains are being recorded. Employment in professional and business services added 74,000 jobs in June, employment in leisure and hospitality added 67,000. Transportation and warehousing added 36,000 jobs, and manufacturing increased by 29,000. Simultaneously, retail ‘general merchandise’ stores lost 7,000 jobs, and residential building construction lost 4,500 jobs.

It would appear that as spending priorities are definitely taking place; the jobs growth is in the current maintenance of lifestyle and not the ‘moving up’ in lifestyle. This would align with the general sentiment of the labor force that most people are just trying to get through the massive inflation impact and sustain their current rate of household expenses.

The decline in the labor force in June “is hard to explain,” said chief economist Aneta Markowska of Jefferies LLC, in light of the strong demand for labor. (link)
It’s really not that hard to figure out what is happening. Well, I should say, not that hard to figure out, unless your job is to pretend not to know things.

That is the dirty secret.... As I said in another thread, the jobs report will be bad and most won't understand.

NYC, California in general, and other deep blue cities and states are hurting and their tax bases are drying up. Wait until these states have to start "finding more money" or go bankrupt.

Meanwhile the south is bursting at he seams with people. Job there are gonna dry up soon too, not because of layoffs, but because there are not enough jobs to support all the new people moving in fast enough.

Cluster-fucketh be thy name.........

I can give you another example...

Guy comes into our office for his scheduled job interview.. He's wearing a tank top, shorts, and flip flops.

The interviewer takes one look and says that basically we're not going to be able to hire him... guy responds, "that's okay, as long as it counts as one of my interview attempts, so i can continue to get my unemployment check."
