Great interview. I think lots of folks east of the Mississippi have yet to truly grasp the excitement that having UTEP and NMSU in the same conference is going to bring.
He's right about the basketball. This is gonna be a premiere mid-major conference.
Personally, I feel he’s done a great job as AD. But more than that, Mario is a great representative of the University at large. He’s a good speaker and (at least to me) an engaging guy. I think that translates well into helping raise funds and getting the community involved in NMSU. I’m not sure if it’s because I follow NMSU so I notice, but I feel like he is really out there in the public eye a lot. He does a lot of interviews and is definitely the face of the athletic department more than many AD’s are.
And yes, I feel that having UTEP and NMSU together will be good for both schools as well as the conference. But it might take a season or two for the rest of the conference go realize what the two schools mean to each other. We are virtually on an island together out here. I think attendance when we play each other will be very near the top of the conference for the season.
I’m also excited that when schools come play the Aggies in many sports, that we help alleviate some of that “it’s a long way out there just to play one game” feel that the UTEP trip probably has. And honestly, we know location isn’t an advantage for us to say the least, so anytime we can be in a league where that’s less of an issue is good for all parties IMO.

Our AD hides at games; but he's a "yes man" for our board chairman, so he'll remain AD as long as our good 'ole boy network of 70-year-olds survives.

Sounds like our former AD. After the president who hired him left, he took it from a 75 to -22 on work ethic. As one Aggie poster once put it, he sits when people stand, doesn't clap when everyone else claps.
