15 years ago or so BBB was the go-to place for the products the name implied, if you were looking for a new comforter set, curtains, kitchen utensils, etc.. they had it. You could to Macy's or Target to find sheets or towels and they would have a few, or you could go to BBB and have a much better selection. The products were never discounted, a toaster at BBB cost more than the same toaster at walmart, but BBB would have 10 to choose from.
Then internet shopping came, and BBB like most big box stores had to lower prices, cut staff, etc. i thought they would go under 10 years ago as well.
The wife and i went into the BBB in Cordova a couple of weeks ago looking for curtains for our living room. they didn't have any. half the store shelves were empty, there were displays of other miscellaneous junk you would find in a Fred's or similar, and a whole section for toiletries, but very little of the items that originally made them a go-to destination.
The pandemic and the resulting difficulties in getting products on the shelves are likely to blame for what is left of the store, but it was probably happening anyway. This is a dynamic that will evolve over the next decade or so, the american consumer likes to "shop"... to actually feel and touch the actual item, and to do that there has to be a store front. BUT, the price still has to be competitive with online retailers... Big box has to continue to evolve and improve online delivery, and i expect Amazon to develop store fronts...
