2022 CFN SBC Preview: Marshall
I didn't realize Grant Wells left for VTech. How do the Herd feel about the position, is this an upgrade? If I remember correctly, Marshall fans weren't entirely pleased with Wells

RE: 2022 CFN SBC Preview: Marshall
The Herd fan base didn't take the Wells transfer too hard... not only did the Henry Columbi transfer in from Texas Tech came pretty quick after Grant's announcement, but he was perhaps inspired to leave by the incoming freshman recruiting class. While everyone is expecting Columbi to service the offense in 2022, the real interesting storyline is the three true freshmen this year (almost all guaranteed to redshirt this year) and the race for the 2023 job.
Pete Zamora was the high school QB that worked with Antonio Brown during his NFL hiatus. Slightly undersized, but he has a huge arm, and has been full of personality and has embraced the town, culture, and fanbase online. He had the best overall performance in the spring game.
Chase Harrison started out as a 4-star athlete from Ohio (magically reclassified as 3 stars once committed to Marshall) is very high academic performer, earned some HS All-American honors, and he has the tools you want in a top tier QB. He chose us over Louisville and some Ivy League invites.
Cole Pennington, son of Marshall Heisman finalist Chad Pennington, is a coach's son who's basically been trained his whole life by a QB who retired with the highest passing completion percentage in NFL history. During his high school career, his school's football program (coached by his father) went from literal startup to Kentucky state tournament contention his senior year.
Coach Huff went out with his first recruiting class and quickly filled up the QB room with some exciting athletes (in addition to one holdover from last year - redshirt Cam Francher who will probably be the 2nd string this year). All things considered, the QB room looks much more exciting today than it did 7 months ago.

I actually liked the kid, but something happened after he got knocked out with a concussion...I think his confidence was shot after the fans turned against him. I thik Columbi will do a good job, and considering only one of our guys has taken any snaps in a game, he BETTER...

I think Wells has some legit tools, but it seemed after the 2020 Rice game his confidence dwindled. Being a local kid, I think it was good for him to find a new school and as you mentioned most Marshall fans are not too upset he has left.
Time will tell whether Grants problems at Marshall were due to himself, or Cramsey (former OC).

Wells had all the physical tools but in high pressure situations it felt like he crumbled.
I was ok with his transfer. It felt like there was a ceiling on how far we could go with him.

Most have already mentioned this, but the kid really struggled when the pressure was on. When Wells can stay upright in the pocket with plenty of time to throw, he can physically make all the throws with ease. The 2020 Rice home game meltdown was hard to watch. He wasn't the same after that in games where he was feeling pressured a lot.
Grant Wells seems like a good kid and is from the Charleston area, so I wish him the best. It was in both parties best interests for him to move on.
I like Pete Zamora to win the starting job in 2023.

Whatever our feeling are or were about Wells, we expect you to put it on him when you play this year. SBC, first.

RE: 2022 CFN SBC Preview: Marshall
Grant Wells morphed into his alter-ego Can't Wells. He threw way too many risky passes (See App State 2020) and the unfortunate thing was that he got away with them his first year. Then he lost his confidence (between his ears). Our last few qb's have been head cases or flat out non-performers.
After Cato left, we had Michael Birdsong (a JMU transfer that performed well against Purdue, but petered away after he got hurt at Ohio).
Enter Chase Litton. After his freshman year, he called himself "Chase Boogie" and changed his number from 14 to 1. After he got blown up by an Akron DE, he sat out the Louisville game against Lamar Jackson and was never the same. He left after his junior year because he thought he was pro material. Undrafted, he picked up a scout team contract with the Chiefs and then faded away.
Then there's Alex Thomson. A transfer from FCS Tennessee Martin I believe. He tried, but he had a limp noodle for an arm.
Isaiah Green. Sheesh, can't throw a punch at your OC and stick around.
But we did have a nice run of QB's that spoiled us rotten: Pennington, Eric Kresser (Pennington redshirted), Pennington, Leftwich, and Stan Hill.
Hopefully this bunch will bring back some of the fire.

That's right. We had a qb transfer OUT to one of the Tennessee FCS schools, didn't we?

Isaiah Green did if I'm not mistaken. Tennessee State.
