Troy just landed a 4-star dual threat QB via Utah.

Peter Costelli, ranked the #21 QB in the nation in 2021 by 247Sports, and the #11 QB by Rivals.

He was Utah's second-highest rated recruit in their 2021 class. He'll have four years of eligibility remaining.

Sumrall must've gone after him pretty hard. He had transfer offers from Arkansas, Virginia Tech, Northwestern, Missouri, California, Vanderbilt, and Nevada.

192 in the ESPN 300. Might be the highest rated QB in the SBC. Like all transfers, nothing is known until he wins the job and steps on the field for the first time. Looks very promising though.

Sumrall said he's looking for another receiver that can blow the top off the defense. Having Costelli in the mix could help in the recruiting process.

Here's what Greg Biggins said about him on 247 Sports in 2020

"True dual-threat quarterback and one of the fastest players in the region, regardless of position. Track standout who anchors his schools 4X100m relay team and has clocked a 10.8-100m. Once he breaks containment, he’s a threat to pick up huge chunks of yards and even go the distance. Very strong lower body and is tough to bring down in the pocket. Has improved his mechanics and tightened up his release. Arm strength is good and he throws a nice deep ball with touch and accuracy. Processing the game quicker is another area he has shown improvement and he can continue to get better in this area as well. Shows toughness and will stand in and take a shot in order to deliver the football. Projects as an impact upper tier Power 5 starter and potential NFL draft pick"

I hate this for Gunnar Watson though. Maybe he should just transfer at this point because he's got 2 years of eligibility left. However if this guy is what everyone is saying he is, he should help take our offense to the next level.

4th highest recruit in school history, I believe. Behind 5-stars Jordan Anthony and Dion Gales, and of course the illustrious Josh Jarboe.

I hope so. We're moving in a new direction on offense this year. Pro style, run heavy, RPO stuff. First time in 15 years we haven't run a version of the spread offense.

On Tuesday, 247sports.com was first to report Costelli’s portal entrance.

Costelli opting to transfer comes as no surprise. Cam Rising, who will be a fifth-year junior next fall, is still entrenched as the starter. Ja’Quinden Jackson (who saw snaps in a backup role last season) will be a third-year sophomore next fall, and Utah’s 2022 recruiting class includes two new scholarship quarterbacks.

On Aug. 30, three days before Utah opened the season vs. Weber State, Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham said he would like to redshirt Costelli. A redshirt meant Costelli could still play in up to four games and preserve the year of eligibility, but he saw no action.

I'm not entirely sure why Huff brought in a somewhat unnoteworthy P5 QB with only a single year of eligibility left. He must have a lot of confidence with the freshman on the bench to take over in 2023.

Yes, immediately eligible. He redshirted at Utah this past season. He'll have 4 years of eligibility remaining.

Not necessarily. You can use the portal once. After that, you have to apply for a waiver that the NCAA has to approve like the old days. If they don’t approve it, which is rare, you have to sit a year.
