Huh, if I ever want to derail a thread again, I'll make sure to make a passing reference to "red state politics."

See where this school lands in our other rankings to get a bigger picture of the institution's offerings.

#103 in National Universities (tie)

At schools whose highest degree is a doctorate.

And:

AMERICA’S FASTEST-RISING UNIVERSITY - usf.edu
University Ranking Times Higher Education (THE), 2022 #33 among public U.S. institutions Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), 2021 #43 among public institutions in the National University Ranking Washington Monthly, 2021 #1 among Florida Public Universities & #8 among all U.S Universities Best Universities for Reducing Inequalities

Just for you Wedge. 04-cheers

Conveniently left out that USF’s research funding has fallen by ~40%. They’re as much an AAU candidate as Hillsborough Community College.

UCF Fan always trying to be negative about USF. Show me the link that contains that information. Or did you just make it up? 05-stirthepot

Check it out for yourself. You’re now behind FSU.

You're hilarious! Those are 2020 (Covid Year) Stats. You do recall USF shut down most of the Campus and It's departments that year, RIGHT? ucf fans. please try harder to piss on USF. We'll probably just denature it and processit as a fuel additive. I'd wait for the 2021 or 2022 stats to come out. That at least would show the trend after the Covid interuption.

You might have a point if any other universities were showing that kind of decrease, but I don’t recall seeing anyone notable that matched USF’s trend. It’s been a few weeks since I looked at it, but my recollection is that none of the other Florida universities have that trend. Maybe USF is a Covid unicorn. Like you say, we’ll see the truth after this year.

I hate UCF too but the info he linked proved him correct. Look at FSU research, they didn’t go down year over year like we did. In 2017 it shows $557 million for USF. 2020 was $337 million.

https://themissouritimes.com/report-reve...versities/

Has Mizzou changed anything since then? Did Iowa State's metrics actually become worse compared to Mizzou during that time or is Mizzou delaying the inevitable if it doesn't withdraw in the same manner?

That might mean that on that old list where the AAU members' names were hidden, it was Missouri and not Iowa State that ranked #94.

It wouldn't be surprising if Missouri and a few others are also feeling the heat, and have been trying hard to increase their competitively-awarded research funding ever since Nebraska and Syracuse left the AAU.

What makes Missouri unusual compared to the others is that it's the flagship of a fairly large state by population. The other old Big 8 schools, all of which have either withdrawn from or are seemingly in danger of losing AAU membership are from significantly smaller states and/or have another in-state public AAU member (as is the case with Iowa State). The State of Missouri has more people than the States of Maryland, Wisconsin, Colorado and Minnesota, yet all of those latter flagships are firmly very high in any graduate research rankings out there.

And yet, the GDPs of Maryland, Wisconsin, Colorado, and Minnesota are all higher than that of Missouri. A smaller tax base and red state politics typically isn’t a good recipe for a well-funded university.

Let me get one thing out of the way: while I don't despise prestigious universities, I do despise the AAU!! Its elitist attitude is pitiful and caters only to the Deep State, and it's run way too much like an elistist and very snobby fraternity, IMO. And no, thank God, all fraternities are NOT like that at all!!! (FYI: LCA and proud!!!)

I would prefer something different that would be more fair to all universities and politics would have zero bearing whatsoever!!!

Florida has red state politics and they have several well-funded universities. Texas has red state politics and they have several well-funded universities.

Delaware has blue state politics and very few, if any, well-funded universities, IMO.

Well, there's a dandy bit of cherry-picking. No mention of blue-state California schools? UCLA best public university in the country. USC, Stanford, Cal, CalTech, Pomona/Claremont/Harvey Mudd, etc.

The University of Delaware is well-regarded. The reason Delaware schools don't match up to Florida and Texas schools is a function of population. Delaware, with way less than a million residents, has only a tiny fraction of the population of Florida and Texas.

I was proud some years ago when Rutgers was admitted to this elite group, but I'm less impressed these days. Membership is more about doing just the right research, from money obtained from the just right sources in just the right way. Elite is great; elitism is not.

As for the "red" state snark above, Missouri elected Claire McCaskill not once, but twice. They elected a dead Democrat - because a Democrat (his wife) would be appointed in his place by the Democrat governor they elected. (It's difficult to run a campaign against a grieving widow.)

While they have voted for Republicans for president of late, it's not always a given - McCain barely squeaked it out.

The point being - not everything falls neatly into partisan politics, especially when the difference between "red" and "blue' is under 4000 votes out of almost 3 million.

Point well taken.
