These numbers are not a good measure unless you start with 1975. Until then there were no at large bids and conferences were limited to one bid.

RE: Schools that make the NCAA Tournament the most (%)
The numbers are what they are. The percentage of years a school has been playing Major college basketball versus tournament appearances. The rules were the same for everyone for each of those seasons, like it or not.

1975 is just another arbitrary starting point. True conferences were limited to one bid prior to 1975, but contrary to popular belief there were at-large bids comprised of independent schools, generally 8 or 9 in any given season.

Another would be 1985 when the tournament went to 64 teams.

I'm sorry if my efforts don't meet your standards.

The numbers are the numbers, but how one uses them may require clarification.

To the poster's point: in 1971, the #2 team in the country didn't make the tournament because they didn't because they weren't conference champions. Same thing in 1974 with the #3 team. If you're implying a tournament team now is better than a non tournament team historically, it may be true, but it also might be completely inaccurate.

Also until the mid 70s, only 25 teams or less were in the tournament. We didn't hit 64+ until the mid 80s.

The rules are not the same. Under 1971 rules UAB would not be in the tournament this year. Under 2022 rules, 1971 USC would have been in the tournament

It is an interesting metric but not apples to apples. It isn’t even apples to fruit.

The SEC was limited to one bid until 1975 and that bid was going to be won by Kentucky most of the time. Alabama and Auburn had only slightly better odds than UAB has of making a major bowl.

I was going to say, to be accurate we'd need to see the number since expansion to 64. I still think our number is pretty good, but some teams would be comparable. Like Auburn.

I suspect we’ve bumped up a bit over the last 2 seasons.

UAB has played the fewest seasons on that list. 04-cheers Gene!

I know y'all don't like the NIT as much, but I think that's also worth mentioning in threads like this. UAB has made the tournament 16 times, and the NIT 12 times...in 42 years...that's incredible. That's 2/3 of its basketball existence spent going to a meaningful postseason tournament.

One of my favorite things about taking people to their first UAB game is when they look at the banners and start doing the math. Usually they'll say something like "wow, I had no idea UAB made so many tournaments" and then watch their awe when I say they've only been around 4 decades.

Huge chunk of all of it happened in the program’s 1st 15 years. You can really see the impact of big changes in college athletics starting with the 1984 Supreme Court case.

The NIT is a heck of a tournament once again, IMHO.
