SMiss Follows Suit...

Southern Miss has received a temporary restraining order from the Circuit Court of Forrest County against Conference USA.

Southern Miss filed a similar request on the same grounds[as Marshall], also noting that the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning is not part of C-USA. The Forrest County Circuit Court ruled in favor of the motion and noted that C-USA “will not suffer any harm from a brief delay in the arbitration action.”

Southern Miss’ next hearing date is scheduled for March 7, while Marshall’s is scheduled for March 16. Old Dominion has yet to confirm any legal case of its own.

How will this end?
Chris Vannini, national college football reporter: Outside lawyers have told The Athletic since the beginning that the most likely result was a monetary settlement through mediation. Those lawyers expected local courts to side with the schools, which has now happened in the cases of Marshall and Southern Miss. The court’s opinion that Marshall is likely to win on the merits could speed up the resolution, depending on what C-USA means by “the remainder of the legal process.”

Last week, outside attorney Mit Winter told The Athletic, “It’s most likely going to end in a monetary settlement anyway. The conference could have saved itself some time and money and looked better in the public eye to schools that may want to join C-USA later if they just confidentially reached a settlement months ago.”

The Sun Belt, where Marshall, Southern Miss and Old Dominion are planning to go, is still expected to release its 2022 football schedule on March 1.
