They have an extremely organized plan that can be described by two words: Pay Less.

Quote:GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Cincinnati Reds completed their third trade this week Wednesday, shipping reliever Amir Garrett to the Kansas City Royals for starting pitcher Mike Minor and cash considerations.

FWIW Minor was 8-12 with a 5.05 ERA and a WAR of 1 last year. He’s owed $10,000,000 this year on the last year of his 2 year deal. Thus, the cash considerations.
Another head scratching move by the Reds. Pick up a player with a $10M salary to get rid of Garrett. Why not just release him?

Miley’s option was for $10M and they decline it, so they trade for a guy making $10M with twice the ERA? Terrible.

They're not paying the $10M, KC is chipping in.

Read that they're paying $8.5 of his $10 million. That's a real head scratcher of a deal.

Reds break even on the $$ this year and then that spot on the roster is completely off the books next year. Reds are trying to eliminate $$ now but are also trying to clear the deck of all of their long term financial obligations and arbitration eligible. It’s going to be Votto pushing 40 and the bad news bears this season.

RE: REDS 2022 SEASON THREAD
That'd make sense, if that were true. They went and spent $14 mil yesterday, on things that didn't make a lot of sense.

I gave up on the Reds before last season, when they were 'going for it', then realized that was too expensive. They then decided to wing it at SS and bullpen. Farmer played pretty well, all things considered, but that was luck. Just throwing Geno at it was beyond dumb. He's a guy that was thought of as a franchise player, coming off a shoulder injury, then they say go relearn your old position. Then when that didn't work, they traded him off like garbage, and it cost Winker to boot. They got 90% of the way there, and said nope, and also messed up a nice player in the process.

Like I always say, no baseball person pays for my opinion, but this has been nuts. Tank. Go for it. Whatever. Don't just throw **** at the wall. To me, it looks like they are throwing **** at the wall.

They haven’t had a plan in over 20 years.

RE: REDS 2022 SEASON THREAD
Well, they sometimes do for spurts. Then Bob gets fed up, pounds his desk, and says get me a winner now. That actually happened, see Jon Fay's recent article. Then it gets too expensive, he slashes payroll, and gets little for his assets. He's a knee jerk reaction guy, in a business that requires thought and patience. He wants to be George Steinbrenner, but he doesn't have George's money. He means well, but he needs to go.

They then start from scratch and do it again. I think this the 3rd round of that sequence. Except this time, there is no logic behind it that I can see. There is still time though.

Bob should have more money now that he's no longer bleeding out from the produce business.

Season is a week away. There is basically zero excitement surrounding this team/franchise going into this season and it’s well deserved. Opening Day (reds home opener this year) isn’t even sold out.

Hunter Greene made the team and will make his first start April 10th. So at least there is one thing interesting going on on Mehring Way.

Outside of Votto I’m not sure the average fan could name more than 1 guy in the starting lineup. Reds Fever…catch it.

Jonathan India, only because he's my youngest son's favorite player.

Reds management has no interest in winning, therefore, I have no interest in watching/following them.

RE: REDS 2022 SEASON THREAD
It's pretty clear the Reds aren't "going for it" this year and I share in that frustration with my level of interest down as well. (I've spent way more of my sports attention lately on the NFL free agency and draft than on the Reds and baseball.) But I do think a lot of fans are overreacting. I don't agree with all the moves they made this offseason but I can see where they are going with some of them. Baseball's a funny game and I think they could be pretty good this year if things break right for them. Of course, they could also be pretty bad this year if they don't. I mean nobody thought the Bengals were "going for it" this year either before the season started.

RE: REDS 2022 SEASON THREAD
It takes a pretty sharp baseball mind/geek, to understand what they did. They are clearing payroll for the future, backloading some new pitching prospects, using platoons to offset the production that they lost, and reducing long term risk overall.

It might work and it might not. Problem is if it doesn't, it's a bunch of players no one knows and bad expensive baseball. The other problem is Bob is never patient enough to see these types of plans out.

Castillo
Mahle
Greene
Lodolo
Minor/Guiterrez

I don't hate the rotation. Obviously a Miley or Gray would be nice, but it's good to see the young talent get a shot.

The problem is the bullpen is garbage and we won't be able to score.

Just like most of the rest of the team, it's tough to say for sure. Castillo and Minor supposedly won't be out for long, but we've seen that turn into wasted seasons in some cases around here. In the meantime, I'm not yet sold on Vlad and Sanmartin. I feel really good about Greene and Lodolo long-term but I wouldn't be surprised to see either or both back in the minors at some point this year and possibly sooner rather than later.

And then there's the bullpen. We've got some nice arms there but that tends to be the biggest crapshoot in baseball. I can't point to any one guy and say I am very confident that he's going to be both healthy and productive for the whole season. Heck I can't even keep most of them straight at this point especially with Sims and Antone on the DL.

Not currently Reds related..Johnny Cueto signed a deal with the White Sox. Prorated deal worth up to $4.2 million depending on how long he stays in the majors this season.

I am in the camp with 23. Look no one in sports is excited about rebooting. But the rotation gives you reason for optimism. Even in the lineup you have Votto, two guys coming off great rookie years, Senzel's hit in the spring. Get a bounce back out of Moose and good contributions out of some unexpected performers and there's a road for this team to be .500. Even if they just dip to a mid '70s type team they'll hopefully have flexibility to build on the young core in the next couple years.

Expect the Reds to be out of the race by June.

Nothing to be excited about until September.

RE: REDS 2022 SEASON THREAD
I think this might be a big reason ticket sales are down. They probably won't be good. The team isn't particularly interesting. Those are the obvious. Also, most people barley know who the players are.

Reds' top 10 tenure list:

1. Joey Votto (9/4/07)
2. Luis Castillo (6/23/17)
3. Tyler Mahle (8/27/17)
4. Aristides Aquino (8/19/18)
5. Lucas Sims (9/2/18)
6. Kyle Farmer (3/31/19)
7. Nick Senzel (5/3/19)
8. Joel Kuhnel (8/16/19)
9. Mike Moustakas (7/24/20)
10. Tejay Antone (7/27/20)

Reds start the indigenous people streak. 4 at the BRAVES and then 2 at home vs THE INDIANS.

As bad as everyone expected. Worst batting average in the league. Look incompetent everywhere.

Could realistically be 2-11 before their first weekend home series of the season.

But hey, where you gonna go?
