You can say that again. And the timing thing isn't just downtown. Hwy 280 and Homewood are pretty bad too! How can you sit at a traffic light for 3 mins with no oncoming traffic from your left or right......at night???

Holy crap yes. The construction issues are one thing- that's the cost of progress. But the traffic lights? Shiiiiiiit. And beyond the timing of them, there are some intersections that simply don't need them. Or at least at night have them automatically switch to flashing caution/red. Thinking of those areas east of about 22nd street. I'll be honest- if it is at night, I run them. Not like just blow through them, but I basically treat them like a stop sign.

One issue has been all the drag racing that has occurred downtown at night on weekends. We used to live on 3rd N & 20th. When we decided to move we excluded downtown because of the racing. Having the lights staggered the way they are may be helping to stop this.

I was not aware that we have a "Fast and Furious: Part 138: The Resurrection" situation in downtown.

Yes, the racing moves to different areas of downtown. 3rd Ave N, the 1st or 2nd Ave N area on the bridge the crosses over to Sloss are two examples. I’ve personally seen huge groups congregate before racing behind Pepper Place & behind Good People. Not sure if it’s better now but it’s the reason we didn’t stay downtown.

They use to do the racing on Sterilite Rd in Tarrant until the city put down some serious speed bumps and Kamtek eventually blocked the middle of Sterilite Rd. Now they race from the airport and other parts of downtown.

Stupidity at its best.

I agree.

I spent Thursday and Friday in BHM downtown, convention at the BJCC, Reba concert Thursday night and stayed at the Hilton at UAB, there wasn’t hotel space closer to the BJCC that had vacancies. Here is the question I have now, does BHM have the hotel space to go along with Protective, Regions, BJCC needs? In a couple months there will be 500 hotel rooms taken by USFL personal, for 2 months. After that is the World Games for 2 weeks.

Also, driving downtown was terrible, between the construction, Arrington Blvd Bridge being closed, stopped at every single light at every single intersection.

Downtown Birmingham is really turning into a wonderful place to be, events, sports(pro and college), nightlife, businesses, new residential buildings.

What would you like to see added to downtown BHM?

There probably does need to be more hotel space. A new Hilton Curio just opened on 1st Ave N (The Kelly Hotel) and a developer is planning to turn the vacant Brown Marx building on 1st Ave N into an AC Hotel by Marriott. There's another hotel planned two blocks behind Good People on the site of the former Sherman concrete plant.

RE: OT: BHM mass transit
With MLB crapping the bed, we can take Regions Field off the list of venues with a crowd, at least the first few weeks of the season so far.

Brings up another thought. Huntsville built a new stadium for their baseball team, which was actually my baseball team(Bears). First season the new field was to be open the season was canceled due to Covid, they played last season, and now this season may be cut short. Wonder how that is effecting the budget of a brand new stadium that could miss two of its first three seasons.

I was talking about that and didn’t realize they wouldn’t be affected. Is MiLB not run by MLB?

Edit:did my own research since, you know, I have the internet. That is for pointing it out.

Way more entertaining at Regions than it was at the Met.
