There is some logic in just kicking deep, but high and making them return it, but you're risking Hill breaking one. I think with Mahomes on the other side it's worth the risk, because there's a good chance you run 6-7 second and they don't get the ball past the 30.

BUT.... kicking it deep and trusting your D not to allow them to get in fg range ins 13 seconds isn't an unreasonable strategy either.

To me the fact that he was driving the ball with ease into the end zone makes it easy. If there was a danger of not getting the touchback I could see considering the higher trajectory kickoff but then again if you're doing something you haven't done all game are you going to execute at a high rate? What if you kick it OB and they get it at the 40 with no time off.

Was Hill in there? I thought Hardman was deep but I could see Hill being the up guy in case of a squib.

The argument is that it would have been a live ball and not allowed 2 plays. I don't necessarily think it's obvious though since if a squib gets picked up early and gets some sort of return you may have ended up in a similar spot and time remaining to where they did after Hill's screen. I don't have any issue with them kicking off; it's the execution on the two plays that killed them.

The interpretation strongly against it I read from an NFL coach was the worst case with a squib would be say a return to the 40 with about 5 seconds left. Which would make the timeouts basically irrelevant and probably force a single Hail Mary shot. I'm not sure I buy that as the absolute worse case but I do think a squib quick would have been the better call there. At least make them use some time picking up the ball and hypothetically getting to the 25 rather than letting them do it using zero of the 13 seconds.
