RIP Dave Campbell

Dave Campbell passed away at 96. His annual "Dave Campbell's Texas football" made all other football previews look like amateur publications. He focused on Texas colleges and high schools.

That’s sad... I literally just got his college basketball magazine in today. His magazines are a great read. RIP Dave

They should rename the Texas Bowl after him—the guy was synonymous with Texas football.

I used to be addicted to his previews, especially for high school football.

Dave Campbell was a legend. His magazine is the gold standard in Texas. At one time, I had a box full of their football previews for about 30 consecutive years.

The magazine has decent profiles of each Texas college team and their respective conferences. At one time, there was a section for the Cowboys and Oilers/Texans. But it makes its mark with its high school section. It contains rankings and a minimum of small previews for each of the over 1,000 high school teams in Texas. The staff sends out a questionnaire to each high school coach and uses them to produce small writeups and predictions for each district.

Friday Night Lights is real, and Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine helped make it so.

Back before the internet, DCTF was an essential for me covering HS football in South Texas. They did all the leg work so I didn't have to. It became an institution itself.

Thanks, Dave!

I used to spend hours every August reading his magazine. The best in the business.
