Was the 3-3-5 the key to the guys making plays in the MACC? Or did the kids rise to the occasion and meet the moment? We just have to demand more from Jackson to come up with the right scheme and find the right personnel to make the defense a lot more productive than it was this year. Hopefully, we won't get wrecked in the bowl that leaves a bad taste in what was an extremely uplifting season for the team and our fans.

They played the 3-3-5 in the first Kent game too. The difference was they used Dolphin and Jammeh more to have better athletes on the field, and then the eye/assignment discipline was 1000x better the 2nd go around.

The team contained the run much better the second go around. But the biggest difference between the first and second game was Crum. After those blown opportunistic on the first series he looked hesitant. Held the ball too long and made bad decisions. Good run D, bad qb play, made the game much easier.

I forget the exact #'s so don't 100% quote me, but it was 2.5 yards per carry less totaling 165 less rushing yards overall game 1 to game 2. So much better job for sure. Crum did miss those receivers early, but in the 2nd half there weren't guys open at all until NIU called the dogs off and backed way off. At least 3 of the 4 sacks were pure coverage sacks. The best pure pass rush win was the hit by Kennedy that caused the Brown pick 6.

The other part of the difference between games was how much better the NIU offense played complimentary football.

We cracked the code on how to defend Kent States gimmick offense. We likely will not lose to them again for a while as long as they keep using that offense.

I didn't notice. I was too busy bemoaning the 30-50 yard chunks they were getting. Great observation.
