Walter Payton Award
In my opinion, Cole Johnson is now the frontrunner. Kelley and Barriere have received the attention all season long, but CJ has surpassed them, now. Number one in efficiency and just killing it every game. Go CJ, bring it home.

RE: Walter Payton Award
Do they still vote on that at the end of the regular season like they used to?

Like I said during the SLU game, it reminded me of 2016 quarterfinals when the #1 offense in the nation, SHSU, also from the Softland, also all offense, no defense, with their supposedly all world QB Briscoe. Their schedule OOc was a Div II, no I-A game. Only beat 1 playoff team and a bunch of cupcakes in a weak defense league. 1st time he faced a real defense all season, and got his ass handed to him, going 13-44, 143 yds, 0 TD/2 INT. JMU was up 65-0 late in the 3rd quarter..

Briscoe still won the Payton award. Was a complete crock.

If the selection was after last weeks game CJ would have a much better shot, but I believe it was at season's end so I'd guess Kelly might have the upper leg.

I don't know when the voting is done, but Cole just got FCS Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season.

3 of the top 5 guys in completion % are named Cole. Just thought that was kinda cool

The best Cole has a TD:INT ratio of 37:2 this year. That is completely absurd 04-jawdrop

Voting was over before the 1st playoff game was played. Cole "Lurch" Kelly will win.

Just another thing about FCS that I won't miss. Landers should've won it over Edwards, and Cole should win it over Lurch..... but won't.

It doesn't help that the FCS press is more western (MVC, Big Sky) oriented. Guys like Sammy Herder are voting

Regardless of this award, I believe if Cole finishes strong, he will have some pros giving him a look. He was firing on all cylinders last game.

“Lurch” will get drafted on day 2 at worst and CJ might get some workouts.

Fine, I’ll put my money where my mouth is. $100 to duke club on me if Cole Kelley doesn’t get drafted by the end of day 2. Would be cool if you took the other side.

Just think it’s pretty childish to hate on the kid. He’s had a hell of a run.

So you're willing to put up $100 that Kelley will be drafted by the 3rd round? (2021 Draft Day 2 was 2nd and 3rd round)..
https://www.sportskeeda.com/nfl/news-202...ay-2-draft

How is it hating on the kid to say he's not going to be drafted top 3 rounds after seeing him throw 3 picks vs JMU, which certainly didn't help his prospects? 03-confused

Walter Payton Award
Calling a college athlete that won the Payton Award “Lurch” is pretty disrespectful. But sure, I’m always game for a bet that JMU wins regardless. I think he gets drafted by the end of day 2.

Deal. He doesn't get drafted by the 3rd round I win. You may as well cut the check to JMU now lol..

Like I said, JMU wins either way. I’m wrong a lot lately, what’s one more time.

Only if the scouts are brain-dead.

I don't believe anyone is hating on the kid. We're simply evaluating his talent, the talent we have seen with our own eyes, especially head-to-head against Cole Johnson. Watch the game again. I will be shocked if you come away saying Cole Kelley is a better quarterback than Cole Johnson.

Pro scouts are going to be looking at several things when evaluating Cole Kelley....

1. Is he an accurate passer? Under 20 yards against the high school talent he has played against in the Marshmallow Conference over his career, yes he is accurate. He has to really wind up to throw beyond 40 yards and it is a rainbow.

2. Is he mobile? No! Big is not the same as mobile. Against a decent defense, he isn't much.

3. Does he handle pressure well? No. He is a pick machine against good defenses. He does not make good decisions.

Cole Johnson is very much the opposite, very accurate, even with the long ball, much more mobile than he is given credit for, and is a superior decision-maker. His TD to INT ratio attests to that.

I'm not saying that Kelley won't get drafted, but I definitely don't see the second round. He has a lot of hype behind him. However, if I'm a pro scout, I am going to watch the JMU/SLU game very closely where there is one quarterback who stands out as a stud and one who stands out as a dud.

I see CoJo as a mid-round draftee.

RE: Walter Payton Award
This conversation is about the Walter Payton.... which I believe will go to Kelly over Johnson which will be based on junk stats Kelly put up vs awful competition. As observed this past weekend.

I made no reference to NFL or "hated" on him. Unless you count him moving about as fast as Lurch as he towered back there taking sacks and throwing interceptions.

But since this has turned into another NFL draft debate... Kelly will be picked in a late round for his size if nothing else. 100% he gets drafted at that size. But it'll be rounds 5 - 7. I stand by my previous statement on our Cole. He's a fantastic QB and an all time JMU great. I just don't see him translating to the league.
