Fast Break Club
We have finally formed a booster club for Men's Basketball. The Fast Break Club will be an organized way to get our most ardent basketball fans and supporters together. As basketball liaisons between the W&M Athletic Foundation and Tribe Basketball, wmmii and I are heading this up.

Our first event will be prior to the JMU game on January 15 in the Person Room. We hope to have two more pre-game gatherings before the season is through. Membership is free for those wanting to attend the pre-game events. The levels of giving are detailed below.

If you want to join, just complete the membership form. If you want to make a gift to men's basketball, you can do so here.

Entry Level:  No monetary commitment
Invitation to selected pre-game events in the Person Room

Tier 1:  $250 gift to Men’s Basketball
Invitation to selected pre-game events in the Person Room
Periodic zoom calls with the coaching staff
Fast Break Club apparel item

Tier 2:  $1,000 gift to Men’s Basketball
Invitation to selected pre-game events in the Person Room
Periodic zoom calls with the coaching staff
Fast Break Club apparel item
Fast Break Club 1k recognition item
Invitation to a Private Practice/Scrimmage
Invitation to the Men's Basketball Banquet

Questions? Contact wmmii or me. And, if you are interested in helping out with the organization of this group, let us know.

RE: Fast Break Club
Question: If I made a qualifying gift on Giving Tuesday, does that count?

Thanks, in advance.

Yes! Any previous gifts to Men's Basketball this fiscal year are counted. Just complete the form. Thanks Billymac!

RE: Fast Break Club
We've had a very good booster club for twelve years until this season...the popular monthly (during basketball season) luncheons, most recently at
Anna's Brick Oven, halted by the pandemic. More than 100 Tribe basketball supporters attended these regular luncheons. Coaches and
players attended these luncheons regularly.

I like your new endeavor, but let's not say this is something new...other than the suggested financial contribution. The luncheons cost
$12 but there was no levels of charges other than that.

RE: Fast Break Club
I recall that one of the off-court criticisms of Tony Shaver was that he wasn’t sufficiently supportive of the idea of a booster club, so someone must have had something different in mind than the Anna’s lunches. I assume that Dane has been more amenable, and this is that “something.”

The financial component is one difference. Perhaps Fast Break will also have more elements accessible to us non-locals? That would be a small plus, although it appears that those elements will all be on a “pay-for-play” basis.

I continue to think it’s smarter long-term to build alumni and other supporter interest with some freebies. Like Flo, those who aren’t already interested in something won’t pay for it. We need to build that interest first. Grow a bigger cow and you’ll get more milk. My impression is that our fan/donor base is more like a sickly calf that needs lots of feeding and care.

All due respect, but that wasn't a booster club, it was an email list. I don't remember seeing anything advertised that didn't come from inside the AD, and that's just the athletics department promoting their own events. It's long been an issue (for me) that there wasn't anything like the QB Club is for football.

Kudos to wmmii and Mrs. Got Ribe for getting this off the ground! That's the hardest part!

We used to have a Fast Break Club. To be honest with you, I do not remember if it ever existed during Tony's era (I think that it did), but I know that it was around during the time that Boyages was the head coach. After selected home games, normally just the Saturday games as I recall, we would get to go into the Person Room after a game for food and beverages. The coaches and players would join us and in many instances the players would still be in uniform. I still remember the players diving in to the pizzas. Jay would come in and serve as the MC. Normally the coach would speak. And no, I am not confusing it with the half time Person Room layout that we have now.

I remember the same thing. I'm almost positive it was early Shaver, but I can't remember for sure.

Funny thing is, I remember Boyages walking in holding an autographed Ohio State football commemorating their national championship (must have been the 2002 team). I think that there was a drawing and someone won it. Why the heck I remember that is beyond me!!

RE: Fast Break Club
What was missing from prior MBB events was the structure of a Booster Club similar to the Quarterback Club. To the best of my knowledge, the past MBB events were set up by the Athletic Department versus being lead by our fans.

For us to be successful we need help and input from everybody so please sign up on the membership link Mrs. Got Ribe sent out plus volunteer to join the Steering Committee to share your ideas! Here is the link:

Active participation will be very difficult for us out-of-staters. The important thing is to organize the basketball boosters among the W&M fan base. The objective is to impact MBB as much as the QB Club impacted football.

Can you tell us more about the Steering Committee -- what it will do, how/how often it will meet, will everybody who volunteers be on it or will there be a selection process, etc.?

I'm glad to hear the vision is for something to be led by the fans vs. by the Athletic Department/Tribe Club. I think a real grassroots organization could accomplish great things.

RE: Fast Break Club
Looks great. Not trying to create a headache, but, just out of curiosity, I googled the name and it seems that Fast Break Club is used most of the time as the booster name for Womens Bball. I counted ~10 WBB DI schools and none for men. I also realize its a tough thing to name.

Sunken Dunken Club?
Bill and Mary Ballers

Edit: Davidson MBB uses it

Steering Committee is open to anyone who wants to commit their time and talent to help decide the best way to setup the Fast Break Club - just express interest on the membership form.

Our agenda is wide open and hopefully the Steering Committee will hold some Zoom meetings which allows fans not local to add their ideas.

RE: Fast Break Club
Just a quick question, now that One Tribe One Day is coming up in a few weeks:

Has the Fast Break Club identified a specific fundraising goal(s) as a top priority for the basketball program? I would think that one way to make our influence felt is to help concentrate our contributions on high priority items.

For example, and I haven't taken the time to research this yet, I can imagine contributing the the Kaplan facility capital project OR contributing to the general basketball program. I imagine the former would have more of a lasting impact on the program but I have no idea which is more helpful to the program.

Thanks for the question. The FBC steering committee is meeting this week and this is on the agenda to discuss. We will definitely have something out ahead of OTOD.
