Williams was the #1 rated JuCo DT by ESPN when he signed with Arkansas in December of 2020. His offers then were from Arkansas, Georgia, Ole Miss, Florida St, Minnesota, Auburn, Baylor and quite a few more. Hopefully the list of mostly SEC transfers we are getting end up working out moreso than those in the the past:
- Jalen Williams (DL) - committment from Arkansas (1/7/22)
- Armondous Cooley (DL) - committment from Miss St (1/1/22)
- Janari Dean (DB/RB) - already signed from Miss St
- Daylen Gill (LB) - already signed from Ole Miss
- Jalil Clemmons (Edge/DL) - already signed from Memphis
And the transfer portal lands USM another one
- OL Bryce Ramsey from Ole Miss (went to Gulfport, MS high school) has committed to USM and has 3 years of eligibility remaining.
And Bivens from Ole Miss today.
Southern Miss. has been on a warpath of late!
They are probably guaranteeing them starting jobs. We are struggling on the lines.
All of these young men played high school ball in MS. Four of them are from South MS. There are still a few more possibilities currently out there to add to this group.

One that has been rumored the last week or so and would be a huge addition (pun intended) is former Ms State OL Calvin McMillian (listed at 6-5, 325 when he signed there in Feb 2020) who was a Covid repeat freshman there this past season but didn't play so he would have 4 years. He's not a local kid but he's in-state from Houston, MS which is just over 3 hours from Hattiesburg. He visited South Alabama over the weekend and is scheduled to visit USM later this week and considering he didn't commit over the weekend to South it's assumed we are still in play.

GS picks up transfer QB from Buffalo. His stats aren't super impressive, but he would definitely be a veteran option for us as we transition on offense. We will have quite the QB competition going on this spring.

We have three incoming freshmen QB's, one had offers to a few P5 schools and another is Cole Pennington, Chad Pennington's son.
If we went to the portal, it would be for a grad transfer.

Coach Hall wants a 1 year transfer for QB too, but it hasn't worked out so far. Looks like it'll be post Spring Practice (when players realize they won't be the starter) that it'll open back up. We'd hoped to have someone here for our Spring ball, but it hasn't happened.

Go get Caleb Williams. I hear he is pretty good. Haha

Be interesting to watch that one. Got a sneaky suspicion someone did something shady. We have had better kickers and worse kickers.

A good get.
Makes one wonder, could a conference try to hinder intra-conference transfers by instilling their own "sit one year" if transferring from one conference team to another? Seems like too much inside intel advantage for players to be transferring within their own conference.

Seems like a bad idea to me if they could, players that would transfer within the conference would likely just leave the conference instead of staying put.

First of all, no, a conference couldn’t do that. Second of all, how dumb would a conference have to be to even want to do that? You’re basically encouraging players to leave the conference then.
If you’re a conference commissioner who wants the conference as a whole to be as strong as possible, you’d rather want a good player to stay in the proverbial family.
Granted, I’d be upset if I were GSU over this. Inevitably, a Coastal player will transfer within conference and it won’t make me happy.

Conferences have done this in the past until just last year.

Good get for Coastal. Struggles with a nagging hamstring injury but his production is fantastic when healthy. Great size, hands, acceleration. His dad was outwardly upset on PT, that GSU ran too much football and didnt pass enough, GSU uses duel threat QB rather than a pocket QB, so forth. Seems like Pinckney and his family went looking elsewhere. Next year should be spicy.

RE: 2022 Portal Watch
A few years back the NCAA changed the transfer restriction policy. Previously, the coaches/schools could block transfers from certain schools. I'm not sure if it hit the threshold of "common" but it wasn't uncommon that coaches/schools blocked conference opponents and any of the OOC schools scheduled for the next year as restricted. A couple coaches/schools abused the power blocking 20+ schools and some athletes got some bad PR out there for the school/NCAA as they were blocking schools from their home state. The NCAA said no more restrictions NCAA wide but they left it to the conferences to sort out if they wanted to enforce an intra conference restriction. As of this past year I'm pretty sure all conferences have said that you cannot block intra conference transfers.
