Huge hire for them if true

Currently OC at ULM, who has a 4-8 SBC record.
From an optics standpoint, CUSA looks like SBC little sister.

He has a strong background/history, so maybe he will be better suited as a HC again than as an OC. They either found a hidden gem or a bought a used clunker, time will tell.

It'll bring eyes to the program which is great for one thats transitioning. His Arizona and WVU teams were good. Should help with recruiting similar to Hugh Freeze and liberty

Any chance you can elaborate or the sextracurricular activities? I too was super disappointed at the way things ended with him.

How about we just not spread "he said she said" gossip about people's marital situations in general. It wouldn't matter to anybody posting here even if it was true.

Whit plays these coaching searches so close to the vest, it's nearly impossible to get a read on the situation.

The other name that's currently being floated is Brent Pry (PSU DC).

I have no strong opinions on who should actually land the job, and I don't think a big name is necessary, but the next guy really needs to have a personality that engages the fanbase and can recruit the region better.

Fuente walled off access to the program and did himself no favors to the fanbase, and his failures to recruit the region effectively haven't endeared VT to high school programs in Virginia.

I think it's pretty relevant for potential hires. Sure, MH isn't one of those, but still. Also it's not gossip...

Let’s hear it. Are we talking Jeff Jones-esque behavior when he was hiding the sausage with a UVA cheerleader ?
Even King David succumbed to the power of the P. No man is immune to that temptation and I imagine it is even harder (hehehe) the more powerful and rich you become. Lots of devils in a red dress looking for Rich dudes to be their sugar daddy.

Pry seems like a pretty likely target for them. He has ties to VT and a defensive guy.

Wow - unimpressed with the hire. 04-jawdrop

That is the best they could do?

Admit I have no knowledge of the guy, but man I was expecting something much more proven for Tech.

I'm pretty sure VT fans expected more as well. ESPN is also reporting that they are "zeroing in" on Pry.
He does appear to be a good defensive coach. I don't believe he has any head coaching experience which would definitely be a concern.
Sometimes the best hire isn't the splashiest hire. Or it could mean that the VT job isn't as sought after as they thought. Time will tell.

Top-40 defensive units every year he's been Co-DC or DC is nothing to look down on, he's got a background in recruiting in VA and the surrounding area, and the VT program seems to value connections to it. I'd also heard PSU really didn't want to lose him.

RE: Mike Houston to VT?
I'm probably not representative of most VT fans, but I can definitely get behind this hire. Unlike Fuente, Pry knows the region and has a solid profile as a recruiter. A few bullet points for the uninitiated:
  • From Lexington, VA
  • Worked at VT as a GA from 95-97 under Bud Foster
  • Has held assistant HC role (in addition to DC) since 2011 under James Franklin
  • Good recruiter with ties to Mid-Atlantic (has recruited a number of high profile VA guys to PSU in recent years)

If I was a Tech fan, I would not be happy. Good assistants frequently don't make good head coaches. You can look at the JMU basketball programs and see that. He "might" work, but I certainly expected something more proven for Tech. Too much uncertainty for a big time football program.

Coaching hires are such a crapshoot nowadays, not even having prior head coaching experience makes a ton of difference. By most observers, Fuente graded out as the best hire of the 2015 cycle and look how that turned out.

I'd rather take a swing on a guy that PSU fans believe will be a big loss to their program, knows & recruits the region well and has done it for a P5 program, and is a culture fit for VT. Dude grew up down the road from Blacksburg apparently.

Like I said I know hardly anything about the guy, but I would of thought they had options of Clawson and Chadwell. Huge risk for someone that has not managed a program before. I guess he "might" work.

They hired an HC last time and he turned out to not be a good head coach. Seems like good G5 HC's frequently don't make good P5 HCs either.

"Proven" successful FBS guys like Napier are hard to find and in very high demand. Louisiana fans say they offered $3.2 mil to try to retain him.
