Are they really that talented if they struggling with basic ball handling and passing ?
The problem is our new 5-stars have no clue about being part of a team. That disrupts the chemistry established with our returning players. And Alo & some others are still a TO machine which doesn't help. I agree with what someone said, these high school stars need to learn a role before they think they can take over a game playing hero ball. But hard to learn roles with an ever changing lineup rotation of 12 players that can't score 60 pts.
1) this
2) give credit where it’s due, Iowa state is a very well disciplined team and probably played the best defense of any opponent we’ve played in 2 seasons. I expected us to make adjustments at halftime but we failed to do so
3) the announcers were total homers for Iowa state and overall were awful. The “this ain’t peach jam bro” comment is one of the most unprofessional things I’ve ever heard an announcer say
4) way too many times when we had the ball our players were just standing there with zero movement or rotation. Then they notice the shot clock and someone tried to play hero ball. You can’t do that against a well disciplined team, the result is contested shots and easy looks on the other side of the court
5) I’m hoping this is a huge wake up call
6) we really have some grade A ******* fans. This thread title is proof.

defensively we're really good. I thought refs bailed iowa state out several times with weak foul calls when we were locking them down. We need to stop with a few lack of focus silly fouls (looking at you Lomax). Offensively it looks like a tremendous struggle for us all the time and I don't know why.

The refs were terrible. Credit to Iowa state but the refs didn’t help. Several over the back no calls and a lot of light touch fouls at key moments.

Exactly.
And if you have followed college basketball for any length of time you know and understand this.

one of the best teaching tools
is a good old fashion ass whooping
That will always humble any team…question is will they learn from it and use it as a positive and not a negative.

We’ll go stomp Georgia and Ole Miss next week and folks will be back on board.
And what if we stink against Georgia AND Ole Miss? Will you be concerned the?

A very real possibility.
Its also a very real possibility that we win both.

The question becomes, when does the recruiting start to dry up? If he keeps underperforming with top talent, other coaches will start using it against him.
If I'm connected to Izzo, Cal and guys like that, I've got my people texting Duren and Bates saying "Told you so." and "Have fun in the NIT." and "You might want to leave before your draft stock plummets anymore."
Precious.
Even Wiseman's soap opera here did not hurt his NBA potential/career.
Precious performed at a high level almost every outing too.

I'm looking forward to seeing those games.
Well, we win or we lose. That much is certain. If we lose I'll probably make some more silly comments but even if we have a terrible year I'll be back the next season pulling for the team.
As has been said, some of us invest a lot of time and money (not me but I do what I can) in athletics and we'd like to see them do well. Many of us schedule our time around these games too and it's frustrating enough to lose but to do it like we did last night is a shock and a big disappointment.

I like your attitude and hope you are right.
Bad losses in November are not always bad thing in college BB. In fact they can do a lot of good when you have a lot of highly touted players trying to learn to play together.
Sure it hurts as a fan with high expectation but historically we often grow a lot when we have these ugly losses early.

It should not be a shock though IMO. After several decades of following tiger BB this is business as usual.
The tigers have a LONG history of UGLY early season losses with a highly touted team. Its happened so many times under so many coaches it should not take any of us by surprise anymore.
I posted last Monday or so that we often struggle and look our worst in these early season tourneys. We have a long history of it. Its always a case of too much one on one and UGLY offensive play. Its a re-run I have seen for decades with the tigers.
I'm surprised no one else was thinking that going into this week That is what the blue colored glasses do though. They blind us from the obvious.

And we are developing a long history of not even making the tourney much less get a high seed. The way this conference is viewed, we have to win early OOC to ensure we even make the tourney.

Unless we get in a better basketball conference we are stuck with this problem, and “have to” does not mean we can win early against good teams. Our record shows we generally don’t. Penny blames himself for the loss and I agree with him, but at least when he gets better, he will stay in Memphis. Calipari didn’t and I doubt Pastner would have. So I vote for keeping our coach and letting him have the time to improve.

I'm certainly not in favor of replacing Penny. That would be crazy but he needs to listen to Brown & get some discipline in the offense, play fewer players who understand & play their role. And BTW, ISU is picked last in the B-12, so I'm not sure we lost to a good team. But we sure lost to a disciplined team that played tough, aggressive defense under a 1st yr coach. I was extremely impressed.

If we have to stay in a non P5 conference then take the Cal approach. Beat the crap out of the competition every year and ride an auto bid into the dance.
