Didn't he rush for the first down on the fake punt deep in our own territory during the Purdue upset in Kill's second year? Gutsy call! To Kill's credit he also knocked off Minnesota in 2010, although neither Purdue nor Minnesota were much to talk about in those years. Plus...for those of you who hate the Illini (and I think that's most people on this board), he lost to the "Illness" in 2010.

Anyway, Kill had his moments and he helped the program rebound from that last rough year under Coach Novak, but he wasn't great by any stretch.

Hot Rod has been trying to create that fake punt magic ever since.

Well Rod’s got some time on his hands…heard EA is doing NCAA this season or next. He can do it there.

Kill landed in the hospital the night before the Illinois game too IIRC.

Good point. It seemed like Coach Novak laid the foundation for the program with a vision and style of football. Coach Kill & Coach Doreen did not stray off the path of that vision and style and took the program to the next level by the time they left.

Coach Ham got us back on the path.

Kill kept them on the path and claimed he built it all himself. he was an asshat.

If he was claiming he built the program and not Coach Novak, he is not only an as*hat, but he committed NIU heresy. He must be be cleansed of sin in the Kishwaukee River.

Dang! Is that all it takes? Had I known, I would have bathed in the Kishwaukee and cleansed all my body parts for a month (okay, maybe two months).

The Kish will wash the sin away, but then you have to worry what will wash the Kishwaukee off of you.

Old Kishwaukee! The beer that made DeKalb famous.

Please don't denigrate the Kishwaukee. I love that river! When I was at NIU, I used to love donning my cleric robe and baptizing young ladies in the Kish. I made them remove all their worldly clothes while I dunked them in the Kish and sang "Old Man River". As I dried them off, I told them that they were now free from their sins and gave them a $20 gift card to the Grotto.

If Kill takes NMSU to a bowl, he’s a legend in Las Cruces. If not, he retires.

Kill’s AD at NMSU (Mario Moccia) was his AD at SIU. I imagine that relationship is a big reason he took the job.

That 2007 year was the worst injuries I can ever remember. I don't know how many starters got hurt that year, but it was brutal. I actually saw them win in Idaho that year. I think I was living in the Portland area at the time.

We ended up with 20+ players out with season ending injuries. Many of them starters or backups who had to become starters then also got injured themselves. We played a 4th or 5th string walk-on QB (Ryan Morris ?) and had to take a backup LB and move him to RB because all our other RBs were injured.

Yeah, that season was an unfortunate way for Coach Novak to go out. Certainly didn't tarnish his reputation though.

Novak did not burn red shirts to maybe win a game or be more competitive. He left the cupboard as full as possible

Kill's first recruiting class is particularly interesting. Probably the best class of athletes they've seen in forever.

The only productive athlete I can remember out of NMSU is Jaleel Scott, because he was a Ravens practice squad player.

RE: Jerry Kill likely new head coach at New Mexico State
I am the first to say Novak did a fantastic job of taking a horrible NIU program and transforming it into a decent program. That 2007 year was brutal to say the least. 2008 was a transition year in which Kill started getting his players.
2008 6-7
2009 7-6
2010 11-3
Kill continued the momentum and recruited well to lead the team to its best run of double digit winning seasons which started in 2010. His recruits were all part of those years for at least the first few of that great run. Its not just wins and losses while he was here. He moved the needle forward. His players were there through 2013-14. We should at least give him some credit for recruiting the kids who took us to the Orange Bowl. That just didn't happen over night. Between Kill and Doeren, they built the program only to have Hot Rod destroy it.
Thank goodness for Temple and their decision to take him off our hands. Hammock (thus far) reminds me of Novak in some ways. (which makes sense) I wish Kill the best.
