OT College Choice
My son is thinking of going to University of Alabama Huntsville.

Anyone here familiar with the school?

He wants to do research with NASA (he wants to be an astrophysicist).

Thoughts?

I know there are some on this board who live or went to school in the great State of Alabama.

Never heard anything negative about UAH ever.

My son is at IMSA (Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy) number one or two HS in the US.

They live on campus. He will have had over 18 math and science credits over three years.
The only do Sophomore through Seniors. 200 kids per class, 100 boys and girls.

He seems to have had three years of college so far.

They recruited IMSA pretty hard in September.

He seems happy if they accept him.

Glad to know good things about the area and the school.

This is a great school. My father worked at UAH. I have worked with students from UAH (and many other schools). UAH is an incredible school. Your son should visit and see if the university feels right.

Huntsville larger than B'ham?

I have only heard good things as well.
I usually stay in Huntsville travelling from ATL (North of loop) to MEM (after working all day).

I'm usually starting from Acworth, cut through mtns and pick-up US 72 shortly after passing I-59 (there may be a bridge hwy in there). Pretty drive at sunset.
The Mtns to I-59 to I-20 to US 78 may be faster but I hate traffic.

Huntsville is now slightly more populous than Birmingham, according to U.S. Census numbers released Thursday. Huntsville has a population of 215,006. Birmingham, which had long been Alabama’s largest city, has a population of 200,733.

Purdue or Auburn would be better for aerospace engineering, but UAH is closer to the source. To be an astrophysicist he need travel no farther than the University of Illinois.

I know little about the school other than that they used? to play D1 hockey, but when I lived in Alabama 25ish years ago, Huntsville had the highest % of phds in the country. This probably excluded tiny college towns.

My dad ran an engineering group in Alabama- mix of Mechanical, Electrical and a bit of Aerospace- and was very disappointed with the quality of Auburn grads. And he couldn’t get GA Tech grads to move to the state. He ended up moving the group to Boise of all places.

Sounds like he needed to pay more.

I've got a college pal that lives there and loves it. Only thing I know about them is they play hockey and have a good basketball team for the D2 level.
