RE: NIU vs Wisconsin vball sold out
Curious what regular fans, season ticket holders and players would think of moving the game?

And the assumptions regarding revenue, attendance what needs to be done is speculative to put it mildly.

Maybe it's me, but it seems a lot of assumptions, short and long term being mentioned.

Kinda like the big plans many had around 2013 for football. Some believing the only reason pipe dreams of B12 and $100m improvements, new stadium was STF.

And this is one volleyball game.

The women’s basketball team a couple years ago had to play a game in victor E. Court because the roof was leaking in the main arena. We should be prepared to move a volleyball match, wrestling and watch ever is held in one spot to the other spot. So no we don’t have to wait for the #2 team again be prepared

Frazier has his flaws. Not being prepared to play a volleyball match on the basketball court is not one of them.

And I’m still not convinced jamming as many Wisconsin fans into the convo as humanly possible for a home game is a good idea to begin with.

The issue in front of our faces is a sold out Victor E. court and an inability to move the game to the larger venue. I get it that it can't happen overnight.

My issue is that by not having a plan to move volleyball to the main floor, you are forever assuming that volleyball won't need a facility larger than what they have now.

Is there no ambition for growth? Like has been said previously, volleyball previously had some big years at NIU. To me, it is sad that the aministration seems content to see volleyball forever be in a side gym that is probably smaller than the average high school gym around here.

Again, the issue isn't "today." It is the lack of planning and the lack of vision.

So if we ever have the #2 ranked basketball team coming to the convo, should we move it to the UC since it twice the size? How about NOW Arena? That’s right around the corner. More revenue! It seems like people here are fine whoreing out the volleyball team for money since we don’t really care about the result of the match.

This place would go NUTS if #2 Wisconsin was coming to Huskie Stadium and we moved it somewhere else for more money.

Try again.

Basketball moved from Chick Evans to the Convo and added 50% more capacity. Volleyball used to play at Chick Evans and moved to the side gym with no hope to ever grow the program.

We aren't talking about moving off campus. We are talking about moving approximately 300'. Why hasn't there been a goal to grow volleyball out of the jr. high gym and into the main facility?

Have some visioni.

RE: NIU vs Wisconsin vball sold out
This isn't the first time a P5 conference team has come to VEC, including Wisconsin once before and Illinois, AND we had a home MAC Championship match a few years ago. I've written before that if anyone can find one word written about the volleyball program in the Master Plan please chime in. I would have added a larger venue for volleyball and more seating in the proposed Olympic venue ( wrestling & gymnastics) if the main floor wouldn't suit the program for even occasional use. One thing about the basketball court, it isn't a permanently installed floor. If they can install a basketball court, they can install a separate volleyball court that has appropriate design elements for that sport.

If anything this is another failure of the convo's design.

RE: NIU vs Wisconsin vball sold out
And it could have been corrected. The basketball court goes together like a jigsaw-puzzle (seen video of it) and, even if not going that route, lay a v-ball floor on top, drill through to the concrete for the post holes, plug with brass plates like they did the Fieldhouse (was concrete under there too).

It was no more a failure of the Convo design than it was the Fieldhouse design. The failure was not to adapt, create options, etc., at the Convo. They had a shiny new thing with some problems (wrong indoor track), a facility they got approved by cutting back (see the unfinished concourse today), so making it more usable was the least of their concerns. Ridiculous that they just moved from a flexible Fieldhouse to a new Convo and didn't bring that thought with them. (They didn't even bother to measure the EF track, which WAS the right size at the time. Those giant wooden bleachers not only folded up; they were mounted on wheels).

Nineteen years and we got a fancy new paint job on the main floor, a posh Nelson Club for the well-heeled, and a sparkling new video board, but for greater use and simple program support, can't drill two holes for net posts. So no matter what the v-ball program becomes, it's stuck in the back gym. But we can call it Victor E Gym. Hey! That'll do it.

What worries me most is that we have some fans who are saying the hell with it. The Chinese may not be popular in some quarters these days, but an old Chinese proverb seems appropriate:
“Be not afraid of growing slowly. Be afraid of standing still."

I plan to look in on the UWGB match today. Two things: just how really good is Wisconsin (Huskies lost 3-1 to GB yesterday), and what does the crowd look like with the Badgers playing.

I would think volleyball would have a separate court which accounted for the post holes. That way you don't mess up the basketball court. I agree it could have been corrected but how often are we selling out vball matches? Planning for extremes isn't the greatest but it all depends on the costs. If the cost is low might as well do it but if it's significant then maybe its the right decision not to do it.

Seriously, how expensive can it be to drill two holes into the concrete? It's not like there isn't a precedent: women's gymnastics competes in the Convo and there must anchors for the uneven parallel bars, balance beam, and vault.

Since it sounds like a lot of posters are disappointed they can’t get tickets to the volleyball match vs Wisconsin Saturday since they won’t move it to the main arena, I thought I would offer my two tickets free of charge to the first person to PM me. I can e-mail them to you. I will be in Michigan for the football game.

Let me say it again, it’s not just about having a sellout you should be able to use both areas for events in case something is wrong with one area(roof leaks, other things)

True that, BR.

Hey! Wait a minute ... if somebody isn't there, and nobody could use their tickets, it won't be a sellout? Wow. No need to do anything for v-ball to use the main Convo. ... Ever. (<this is sarcasm).
