Former Afghanistan President Issues Statement on Why he Fled the Country
Quote:Former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani says he abandoned the country because he thought it would prevent violence the day the Taliban took the city, leaving thousands of his citizens to be rescued by American troops.

After the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan in August, 20 years of American taxpayer money and the lives of thousands of sons and daughters lost fighting in the Middle East went down the drain. Now, the former Afghan president has admitted that he avoided war with the Taliban on purpose in the name of public safety.

On August 15, hours after the Taliban took control of Kabul, Ghani fled to the United Arab Emirates.

“Leaving Kabul was the most difficult decision of my life, but I believed it was the only way to keep the guns silent and save Kabul and her 6 million citizens,” Ghani said in a statement posted to Twitter on Wednesday.

“I left at the urging of the palace security, who advised me that to stay risked setting off the same street-to-street fighting the city had suffered during the civil war of the 1990s.”

Thousands of Afghan residents and American troops, translators, and even K9 dogs were trapped as Ghani left the country without a scratch. Although Ghani claimed he fled the country to “avoid bloodshed,” multiple sources, including CNN, claimed that women were being murdered by the Taliban mob just days after he left.

Ghani apologized and admitted that he had failed his people in his statement.

“It is with a deep and profound regret that my own chapter ended in a similar tragedy to my predecessors — without ensuring stability and prosperity,” he wrote. “I apologize to the Afghan people that I could not make it end differently.”

Many Afghanistan’s lost their lives fighting in this war alongside America and its allies. The suicide bombing that killed 13 American troops also killed close to or over 200 Afghanis. Many see what the former Afghanistan president did as a slap in the face to all parties involved.

You spin me right round, baby right round.....

You left before they cut your head off and put it on the end of a stick to show off on the streets.

I can't really say I blame him. I'd like keeping my head attached too.

I don't think it's wise to say Afghanistan was a complete failure when you consider how many people lost their lives keeping us safe.
