An optimal expansion plan
If the AAC wants to respond in a way that a) keeps Navy in the fold, b) keeps them relevant in basketball, and c) doesn't dilute the football product too much, they need to do the following:

1) add Rice and UAB for all sports
2) add VCU and Dayton for Olympic sports

It's possible the AAC could raid the MW but I doubt it. I also don't see the American getting Army.
By doing what I mentioned, they keep Navy happy by adding a 2nd Texas, not totally dilute the football product by only going to 10 adding former 2000s C-USA schools, and keep basketball relevant by ripping the top off of the A-10.

In basketball, they would have
Memphis
Temple
Wichita State
VCU
Dayton
SMU
Tulsa
UAB
USF
Tulane
Rice
ECU

That's a solid mid major league.

In football:
West: Navy, SMU, Rice, Tulsa, Tulane
East: Temple, USF, ECU, Memphis, UAB

in the last 4-5 years has VCU done anything that warrants them to be a top basketball team? they missed 2 ncaa tourneys n didnt get past first round in the other 3.

VCU hired away the Rice basketball coach.

Their main accomplishments since 2015 are that they've won two regular season championships, one conference tournament championship, averaged 23 wins per season* and earned 5 NCAA bids, despite going through two Head Coaching changes.

2019-20 18-13.....M. Rhoades NO POST-SEASON TOURNAMENTS
2018-19 25-8.......M. Rhoades A-10 REGULAR SEASON CHAMPION; NCAA BID
2017-18 18-15.....M. Rhoades
2016-17 26-9.......W Wade.....NCAA BID
2015-16 25-11.....W. Wade....A-10 REGULAR SEASON CHAMPION; NCAA BID
2014-15 26-10.....S. Smart....CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT CHAMPION; NCAA BID

*2020-21 win pct used to extrapolate total wins per 32 game season. Avg of 23 wins from 2014-2020 and in 2020-21 (estimated.)
