New Grant of Rights Deal for the New BigXII?
Do we all sign a new Grant of Rights deal to secure the tv money?

The AAC members didn't have a Grant of Rights because it wanted to be free for realignment. That's kind of the way I see the Big12 too. We are all hoping for Big10, PAC, or ACC invites in a future round of realignment.

In order to maximize the tv deal with need a Grant of Rights. The L8 probably feel like that's the big trump card that helped them navigate through this Texas and OU exit.

Maybe realignment cools for now and we can sign a 10 year GoR.

Who are the "L8?" That's USF's label for us - why are you using it?

We'll sign a GOR if the networks want it in exchange for the money. Otherwise, probably not. It'll be part of the negotiations. The current GOR is the reason we have UT/OU over a barrel - it's a very useful legal tool and has been strengthened by the recent events.

IMO, agreeing to a GOR is entirely dependent on what financial incentives it would offer, as well as the length of the term. We don't want to be locked in for 20 years, because no one can anticipate the college sports landscape that far in advance.

Not sure if schools will given how much more other P5 leagues stand to make. WVU would likely be very reluctant since they saw UL take an ACC spot they couldn't go after due to the Big 12 GOR. Not saying they'd have gotten it but I don't think they want to lock down that way again should it come open.

If they do sign a GOR they had better get the tv partner to back up a money truck in exchange for it.

Oh sorry, bad habit I guess.

Is there a preferred short hand for the remaining members of the Big12?

If you're waiting for a Big10, PAC, or ACC invite then stay in the AAC. The Big12 is going to be #3 of the Power 5 conferences. I don't see the SEC (#1) or the B1G (#2) inviting anyone else from the Big12 in the future so, be happy where you are.

Depends on the money and for how long. I can’t imagine wvu would agree unless we’re talking acc level payouts

More money is great but, wouldn't you rather get to the CCP? If so, then the BIG12 is your best opportunity. Not going to happen in the SEC or B1G and only a small chance in the ACC which, aside from Clemson, is worse than the BIG12.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that WVU and Ok St have no intention of signing one. Can't speak on the other schools.

I doubt a GOR will make much difference in contract value. IMHO, none of the 12 schools is irreplaceable.

When I see “L8”, I just read it as “Legacy 8”, instead of the intended insult.

I suppose “R8” for “Remaining 8” is as good a shortcut as any.

I expect the newbies would be more willing than the oldtimers8. WV, Kansas, and OK state may want to leave the exit door propped open. I would think the shorter the deal, the bigger the chance of a GOR.

I didn't know that USF started the L8 label. I never used it but if everyone finds out that USF started it no one will use it. Thanks for the info.

If you did a tv deal and GOR that matched with the end of the ACC’s, that’s the next time I see more realignment potentially occurring.

RE: New Grant of Rights Deal for the New BigXII?
The GOR if signed will be in 2025 after the big10 and the pac12 have signed and settled their media deals. At that time, the landscape will be settled until 2032 and any GOR will end at the same time as the ACC’s (2036) Not a concern right now.

The shorter the contract, the more likely a GOR.
