Those schools are Boise State, Colorado State, Memphis, and SMU.

I'd believe that they are discussing a +2 (2022), +2 (2023 or 2024), and then maybe +2 (2025).

And CSU would be a good fit for the newB12/14/16, even if a bit of a project. Their recruiting should improve swiftly, then they will regularly beat CU.

They're a project and it seems the Big 12 has decided they can't afford "projects."
UH, UC, UCF and BYU are not "projects." They're pretty much What You See Is What You Get. Unfortunately for Rice and Tulane, that is true for those programs as well.

Would the Big12 (maybe Big14 for a year or two) have enough open OOC slots to help the AAC in the transition? E.g., to fill the games vacated by their departures?
Assuming the XII/XIV stays at 9 conference games, no. The 3-4 schools departing the AAC will lose 1 non-conference game each season, unless if they had other Big 12 teams on their schedules, in which case they effectively lose none.

If the XII/XIV drops to 8 conference games, then potentially everyone in the conference will need additional opponents.

BYU would cause the bigger ripple effect in giving up as many as 9 games each season. That would be the more fertile ground to plow for remaining AAC teams.

Keep in mind the AAC will most certainly be adding teams. Navy isn't a full member, and Wichita State doesn't play football, so there has to be a minimum of eight full members. Losing just Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF would likely result in a nine team round-robin, or ten teams playing eight games assuming a Texas-centric addition to keep Navy satisfied. Losing USF and/or Memphis likely just means the AAC adds more schools.

Taking Colorado State could also have more implications for C-USA, as UTEP might look at the Mountain West if their in-state rivals start leaving.

Not convinced Big 12 will grow larger than 12 at least before the next round of expansion when the ACC GOR ends, but I definitely think Colorado St. Is a fit with the old Big 8 schools.

A division of BYU, Colorado St. Iowa St, Ok State, Kansas State, and Kansas + 1 other would be pretty solid.

Colorado State just built a new football stadium so they're definitely committed to football. Also, even though BYU doesn't necessarily need to be connected to the rest of the conference due to the fact they have a lot of resources they can devote to travel, it would be nice to invite a school that would link them to schools located east of the Rockies. That school would be Colorado State. Finally, their hoops will improve as well in the Big XII.

The other school I would like to see invited after the initial four would be Memphis. We, the University of Houston, share a lot of history with them. They also share a lot of history with Cincinnati and to a lesser degree UCF, though that history is still significant since the three of us (UH, UCF, and Memphis) made the jump from CUSA to the Big East/AAC at the same time, and UH, Cincy, and Memphis were part of CUSA from 1996-2005. (UH was a charter member of CUSA, which started athletic competition in 1995, but due to having to fulfill their obligations to the SWC during its final year of existence, had to wait a year before joining the newly-formed league.) Their football is finally consistently decent. And when they're good, man, they're scary. As for hoops, well, they're definitely coming back up, but they most certainly have history as a great hoops program.

So after the initial four (BYU, Cincy, UCF, and Houston) join, if I were the Big XII, I'd go after Colorado State and Memphis to give both the easternmost schools (Cincy and West Virginia) and BYU a travel partner/bridge to the rest of the conference. To me, it just makes the most sense.

Having just spent part of the summer in Colorado, I feel certain CSU would be a good addition to the B12/14 and CSU has a lot of support at both ends of the front range. I was surprised to see support for them in Colorado Springs in particular. Colorado is now three states - California, Old Colorado, and New Colorado. California does not care about college football. Old Colorado follows the Buffs, New Colorado is ready to support CSU.

You want to shore up traveling I think and recruiting. USF is a no-brainer because you guarantee a visit to Florida each season. BYU & Colorado State as travel partners makes a lot of sense, I would first reach out to Air Force before Colorado State and I don't think Air Force would say no, the conference would be much more doable and you leap-frog Army & Navy from a competition stand-point. I think the Big 14 makes a lot of sense, they own the trademark and you can do an easy 9-game schedule with one permanent rival while covering the Mountain, Central and Eastern timezones.

CSU c’mon. Ft Collins is small. Denver could care less. The Front Range doesn’t really care about college football yet people on message boards keep talking about them. Look at their tv ratings and merchandise sales. CSU is a good school and Ft Collins is a great little town but they are a non fvcking factor in realignment. I lived between Boulder and Ft Collins. You could barely find a CSU shirt or ball cap.

Hence, give Air Force an offer.
