2021 Volleyball
Nice first match win for the women over Western Illinois; a 3-0 sweep. Next match is today at 11:00 against Air Force.

The team seems pumped...I have a good feeling about this year.

Valiant effort today, losing 3-2 to Akron. Now 2-2 on the year.

While at a the Mason Invitational this past weekend, the scuttlebutt was that Deputy AD Burke is strong outside favorite for the UNCG AD position that recently opened. Apparently there is a favored internal person but Burke is supposedly being considered. Not sure if she would be interested since she has been here since the days of Driscoll and helped keep the wheels on this thing the past few years despite some craziness. Always love to see WM people go and be successful.

Great opportunity! Hope she is successful.

Today is the last match of the season. Congratulations to the six seniors who are concluding their careers. A special shoutout to Julia Brown who will wind up high on the Tribe record books in several categories after a stellar career!

Another terrible season. Womens' volleyball costs the College a fortune...almost all the players are from out of state, many from far flung states,
that are expensive scholarships. I can't remember the last time, if ever, we had a winning team.

The cost is over 1M but is going no where at this point due to Title IX.

IMO this money could be repurposed to start funding either softball and/or W rowing. Adding these W sports that have a high athletic count in place of this sport would help address our Title IX issues plus show we are attempting to expand the opportunities for women if both we added! This will only work however if the BOV also makes an appropriate long term adjustment to our admission policy to go from 61% women to only 55%.

Our current Title IX approach feels like kicking the can down the road that has land mines still in it from Vietnam.

IMO it was apparent from the public material released last fall that Huge's Title IX strategy had been to add these sports but got short circuited by the ill advised Covid 19 decision of terminating the 7 sports.

Hopefully the new AD will lead the way.

This solution was raised last fall to the BOV and President Rowe but the administration appears deeply resistant to it. I will be interested to see the gender percentages for the next few years.

Excuse me if I am ignorant to this fact, but are you saying W&M has a "policy" of admitting 61% females, or is that just what the most recent percentage happens to be based on admitting who the admissions office determined were the best candidates?

Since colleges normally get about 60% female and 40% male applicants, if you admit the most qualified then you average admission ratio will be the same. Some Colleges like Richmond use the approach of setting a cap on female admissions of maybe 55% to maintain a more balance ratio on the campus. W&M had such a policy in 2008 and earlier but no more.
