Losing NMSU will not impact the WAC in any stretch as it relates to expansion plans or not. As Moccia says, 12 or 14 is better than 13! :)

I'm not so sure any Sun Belt school other than maybe us would consider CUSA. I'm not even sure we would go for it at this point. The JMU board seems to be pretty anti anything subAAC as well.

Or if Texas State, UTEP, North Texas, Rice, and New Mexico State joined forces and could convince at least 3 southwestern based FCS schools to move to FBS, they could resurrect the Big West or old Southwest Conference, and have a reasonably tight footprint.

The problem is that there is a lot of gatekeeping.
The old Southwest conferences schools dont want to share a conference with UNT. In the years prior to TXST's move up, UNT did not want the Bobcats in a conference with them. (plenty of posts on GoMeanGreen about it).

Likewise, TXST likely does not want to be in a conference with Lamar and Sam Houston.

I agree, but the way college athletics has evolved since then would probably require such feelings to be re-evaluated. I did see that North Texas is on the Mountain West Conference's "Next to be Invited" list along with Tulsa.

Feelings probably should be reevaluated but.... they won't. Unless some of the FCS schools make some big improvements facilities and support wise.

How in the hell would they “resurrect” the Big West when it’s already got 11 members, 2 of which are California schools that play FCS football? Considering it’s got Hawaii in it, doesn’t seem like the footprint would be too “tight”.

Yeah, I didn't realize the Big West Conference namesake was still around.

Good lord. This is just about too much... The namesake? By namesake, you mean the CONFERENCE?

No. Not the conference. The conference could call themselves whatever they wanted. When the Big West dropped 1-A football apparently the name was carried on to represent a conference that no longer included Boise, Fresno, and several other known programs but instead represents an all-California conference in which more than half weren't members with the 1-A football schools.

A namesake is a name that is carried over from a person, group, or thing to represent a different person, group, or thing. That's the definition of a namesake in your Webster's Dictionary. The Big West Conference name applies here.

But perhaps I could've used the term trademarked name because that was really the whole point--the licensed name.

RE: Should the conference do anything if NMSU gets grabbed by the MWC?
NMSU is not getting an invite to the MWC. Period. The only shot we have at a conference is if CUSA gets decimated and needs a travel partner for UTEP. Assuming UTEP sticks around. Other than that there is not a viable hope for us getting into a conference any time soon. Doesn’t mean we’re going to stop looking. I like the make up of the new WAC but let’s be real, it’s gonna take at least 8-10 years to get this conference to FBS. That’s if it ever happens.

No. There are so many conferences in dire straights, and the WAC has actually gotten stronger. Let's ride this train a while and grow when obvious advantages appear.

Don’t worry, the feeling is mutual. Incarnate Word. ******* Incarnate Word. Really? That’s bad. Like, really bad. You’re still the same D2 program you were decades ago, just with a gorgeous stadium. Like, you guys might beat HBU. MIGHT.

Sammy H you do realize that while nobody care about the worst D2/FCS programs only like 10 people care about the best D2/FCS programs? You’re like the bum with a cardboard box that looks down on the bum with a slightly smaller cardboard box.

Huh? 03-lmfao What does any of this have to do with how many people care? I don’t give two ***** if nobody watches Texas State football. I’m still gonna dump on the few that do.

article on MWC potential schools.

New Mexico State
There is a lot of uncertainty due to conference realignment, and there are a few assumptions we can make for adding each of these schools. No matter which teams have left or joined the Mountain West, New Mexico State is certainly worth a look, but there are also a number of question marks. Before we get into that, it’s important to laud that these Aggies have completely dominated the WAC in basketball since joining in 2005.

However, there’s bad with the good. Football has been a disaster and this program doesn’t seem like they’re suddenly going to be on the cusp of greatness, even if they join the Mountain West. The Aggies have been independent in football for the last four seasons, with a 6-22 mark in that time span. Coach Doug Martin led the team to an Arizona Bowl win in 2017, but you have to go back to 2002 to find their second most recent season over .500.

You also have to wonder if New Mexico would really want to see their in-state rivals join their league, especially when the Aggies didn’t join the Mountain West years ago with former WAC conferences mates like Boise State and Fresno State, among others. There’s also certainly a question about how that basketball program would fare when you ramp up the competition a notch or two. However, New Mexico State has the geography, brings a talented basketball program, and could certainly use this conference to improve football in the coming years.

From same article he has UTEP as well as a possibility

UTEP
There are a number of different directions the Mountain West could go to hunt for new members, including taking a few programs from Conference USA. We don’t specifically know what the conference could hypothetically be looking for, whether this search is imminent or a few years down the line, but UTEP is one of the schools that stands out immediately.

The basketball team has certainly had its ups and downs, but seem to be trending back up after hiring outstanding coach Joe Golding from Abilene Christian. The Miners have great facilities and are located right there near New Mexico on the very western tip of Texas. A clear issue is the football program, which has really struggled in recent years, having not won a bowl game in over 50 years. Maybe the program would be jumpstarted after nearly two decades of stagnating in Conference USA.

UTEP pushes the Mountain West into Texas, giving them a gateway into the El Paso market. However, the Miners might not be the best choice for a proactive addition considering their lack of success recently in a few of the flagship sports. They’re also located very close to New Mexico State and it’s fair to wonder if the MWC would pick them over the Aggies unless both teams got the invite of course.

I'd like to point out the homeless in the Seattle/Portland area don't have cardboard boxes they live in hotels bought by city officials.

It helps but additional help needs to be part of the equation. Also about 10% of all federal money being sent to Seattle and Portland for the homeless crisis is being used for its purpose. Thank you for reading my ted talk...

Agreed, just like moving homeless into shelters it’s a temporary solution. The only real solution is long term housing coupled with addiction and mental health for those that need it and a jobs program. As someone who has experienced homelessness if you don’t have mental health issues going in you definitely will during and for a long time afterward. Even after things get better. But I totally believe you that a marginal amount the monies allocated for this problem rarely see the problem itself. Either gets tied up in bureaucracy or gets used to house the inner linings of some politicians pocket.

Evidence re homelessness supports the efficacy of a stable housing situation coupked with collaborative case management that supports the client's achievement of safe, realistic, and reasonable goals within a complex health, social, and fiscal environment.

Intermission is over, now back to WAC expansion….

I would like to point out that the issue of homelessness is technically directly related to NMSU and expansion as we are currently homeless in regards to a FBS football conference.

Voluntarily homeless, I might add. You could choose to join the WAC FCS conference where you’d fit right in.

Good article, lopes. I read it last week. The key point is the "Aggies have completely dominated the WAC in basketball since joining in 2005". That would be WAC 1.0 and WAC 2.0. Vamos a ver on WAC 3.0...
