If they make a move, they'll just take Clemson and FSU.

Those are not the two most valuable programs in the ACC.

Football is 80 percent of the value of a conference's TV contract.

If basketball was 80 percent, or even 50 percent, the SEC would be inviting Kansas.

Carolina is more valuable overall, considering many factors.

If your argument is that a conference looking at potential members wouldn't really care about how much football TV value Clemson brings, then we will agree to disagree on that.

No, of course that is one of many factors.

I don't remember Bilas pitching that the leagues would swap schools. That sounds eerily reminiscent of a Lance take we've heard a million times.

This idea won’t go over well with ACC fans anymore than it does with SEC fans. Bilas knows many ACC fans are basketball first fans. Some ACC fans are strictly basketball fans. Merging the conferences, ACC basketball would be stuck SEC basketball, that for the most part, has been awful forever.

Bilas knows that if the Big Ten and SEC both expand further, the ACC is going to be targets and North Carolina is going to be one of the most in-demand programs and Duke will be an afterthought.

We all know Duke as the program it's been under Coach K for 40 years.

But Duke is some bad conference alignment decisions and a couple bad follow-up coaching stints away from being in the shoes of SMU, Rice, St. Bonaventure, Tulane, Southern Miss.

SMU and Rice got left out when the SWC broke up. SMU wandered in the desert for 30 years. Rice is still wandering. St. Bonaventure was a better program than Syracuse until right before the Big East formed. Tulane passed on promoting assistant coach Rich Rodriguez after their undefeated season, and then -- like Southern Miss -- half their conference abandoned them.

What makes Duke the Duke we know could all be gone in the next decade.

Eh, the SEC has 11 NCAA basketball titles. That's not as many as the PAC (16) or ACC (15), but it's more than the Big 10 (10) or the Big 8/SWC/Big 12 (6).

Basketball has never been the SEC's strong suit, but they haven't been awful in it.

Point taken though, overall - I would bet that the majority of SEC and the majority of ACC fans would both be clearly against any kind of merger.

It could be over for Duke after Coach K retires. Same issue at Carolina after Roy Williams retires. Indiana has yet to recover from Bobby Knight's firing two decades ago. Plus the game has changed.

One of these is definitely not like all the others.

Here’s a fun exercise: if you were going to take the SEC to 20 with 4 ACC schools, who would you take?

Clearly with Wake, BC, Syracuse, and Wake again (they are just that valuable)! But seriously it would probably be FSU, Clemson, UVA, and UNC

Right, the Bonnies are really good at basketball. SMU has been solid of late, too. But the point is they got relegated to second class citizens when the Big East formed without them. I'm assuming you mean that Bona doesn't have a football team, which is true, but not the point.

Doesn't matter what level you play at, it can all go bad in a hurry if you get left behind.

RE: Jay Bilas: ACC's Jim Phillips should talk to SEC about merger
Bilas says the SEC will become a Jr NFL and a Jr NBA and that the ACC should try to merge with it? Maybe. But I won't believe the former is intended and the latter desired until those conferences lend their support to the formation of a players union. Without one, they might have to live with the richest schools always being on top.
