MAC News: Ohio Football HC Frank Solich Retires

Odd timing of this makes me think it's health related.

I don't think he had dental care as part of his benefits package.

Rumor is 2021 was going to be his last year anyway. He was hired at Ohio at age 60 and didn't get his 1st HC job until he was 53 at Nebraska when Tom Osborne retied after the 1997 season. He had spent 1979-1997 as an asst at Nebraska.

Ohio was lucky to have him and lucky he was older when hired. If he was younger once he got them stable he would have been gone.

As much success that Solich has at Ohio he never won a MAC title. He only made 1 MAC title game in 2016 losing to Western Michigan 28-23.

Solich reminds me of Doc and Doc's contract wasn't renewed because of only 1 conference title in 11 years. Solich is a hero in Athens OH because before him they had only 6 winning seasons since 1968.

IF Doc wants to coach again, I could see Ohio hiring him, as long as he wins 7 games and takes them to a bowl, he'd be loved.

I have no problem with Doc, if he wants to coach again I hope he finds a spot to do it. But Ohio has already hired their long time OC as HC in Tim Albin. Albin has been at Ohio ever since Solich arrived in Athens in 2005.

And you chose to remind of this because? A. Stock has the worst winning % among the 30+ longest tenured coaches in the country? or B. "Middle" is currently synonomous with "Mediocrity"? or C. MT has the only FBS Coach who is guaranteed additional years on his contract by winning an average of 6 games per year? 03-puke
Seriously, since we are never gonna fire Stock; I hope he starts winning some damn games. 03-weeping

I thought if Doc was ever to get another FBS coaching gig, it would either be Ohio, EMU, or FIU.

Doc would be Solich 2.0 at Ohio (I actually think Doc could be more successful at OU than Solich), but he'd almost assuredly continue the recent trajectory for the Bobcats.

EMU is a football program that is just completely lost in the wind. They need someone like Doc that could come in and give them a few rounds of moderate success and stability like Solich did for OU.

And finally - FIU. Doc has been connected all around south Florida for 3 decades. Doc at FIU would likely keep more local talent home and probably turn FIU into a consistent bowl program, which is ahead of where they are now. I think Doc at FIU could probably have better results than Doc at Marshall.

There are programs out there that I don't think anyone could turn around. EMU is one of those. Ypsilanti, MI and the EMU campus sits just 7.9 miles away from Ann Arbor, MI and the University of Michigan campus.

The current coach at EMU is 22-40 but since he has made 3 bowls, he probably is there as long as he wants to be. Even though they lost all 3 and he is 18 games under .500. This would get most if not everyone else in the country fired.
