Maddux gives up seven runs in 5 2/3 innings
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- As far as Greg Maddux is concerned, it's all a matter of location.
Maddux was hit hard for the third straight start, and Pat Burrell and Jim Thome each homered twice and drove in five runs to lead the Philadelphia Phillies over the Atlanta Braves 16-2 Wednesday night.
"My location is terrible,'' Maddux said. "When that happens, it's tough to pitch. I feel bad for the guys behind me.''
Maddux (0-3) is off to his worst start since 1989, when he also lost his first three decisions for the Chicago Cubs.
The four-time Cy Young winner has now allowed 18 earned runs and 30 hits in 14 2/3 innings, leaving him with an 11.05 ERA. In his last outing, the Marlins pounded him 17-1 Saturday night.
Maddux was touched for 10 runs, seven earned, and 12 hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out seven, but walked three and made a throwing error, a rare mistake for the Gold Glover.
"Physically I feel fine,'' added Maddux. "I'm just not throwing the ball where I'm trying to throw it and they're not missing.''
Braves manager Bobby Cox didn't appear to be too concerned about his ace.
"Maddux made a tremendous amount of great pitches,'' Cox explained. "He made some bad ones.''
Phillies manager Larry Bowa agreed with Cox.
"(Maddux) is going to be all right,'' Bowa said. "He had a lot of decent pitches. He had great movement. It was just his location.''

I hate to say it, but I'm afraid he's done. All three of his starts thus far have been blowout losses for the Braves. :(

As I said in the Baseball board, he's going to try to turn it around but I just don't know that he's got enough left in the tank.

You hate to see somebody as good as he has been getting shelled like the Republican Guard. I don't like the Braves but I do think Maddux is a fine person and a great competitor.

How can you not like the Braves? They're a class act.

Parker, Lefebre, Wills, Gilliam, Roseboro, WDavis, TDavis, Koufax, Drysdale, Perranoski, Regan, Sutton....that was a great outfit. Cards fans like myself used to dread the West Coast roadtrip - which then was only LA and SF. Frisco had a heavy hitting team. Came in 2nd several years, when the leagues were all one division. Mays, McCovey, Cepeda, Hart... talk about a murderer's row!

I think he scrubs pots as a part time job. Just turns it up and puts it on his head and gives it a spin.

I met him, Skip, Pete, and Joe at Braves Affiliate Weekend a couple of years ago when the news/talker I was programming was carrying them. Great guys all of them.
GDawgs88, did you happen to watch any of the Philly games this past series on Turner South and happen to notice how ridiculously obnoxious the Philly fans are? Those people are worse than LSU fans.

Between watching our high school baseball team and watching Fox News on the war, I haven't seen a single game on the tube so far this spring.
I love watching two good teams battle it out, so maybe the war will end soon and things can get back in a normal routine.

They are bad. Imagine how much trash they'd talk if they actually won the NL East.

This all reminds me of some of our friends down the road in Starkville.

SORRY ABOUT THE BRAVES AND MADDUX. THEY'VE BEEN ON TOP FOR A LONG TIME. MAYBE THEY'RE JUST GETTING OLD. DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT NATIONAL LEAGUE, LIVING IN AN AMERICAN LEAGUE CITY. OH,
HOW ABOUT MY KC ROYALS. THEY'RE NOW 8-0. THOSE YOUNG PITCHERS
ARE FINALLY PAYING OFF.

The Royals have done and excellent job re-building that franchise. We stole Paul Byrd back from you guys, and wouldn't you know it...he's out two to four months after elbow surgery. The Braves have the same injury bug that the Rebs always seem to have right now.
