23 players transferred out of your program after last season?? Hmm, that number seems alarmingly high. What gives?

They saw all the players Toledo recruits and wanted to stand in the waiting line.
They said they don't care if the play or not. They just want to be part of the #1 recruiting school in the nation.

That is pretty typical for all programs. Most years about 35ish guys leave, and 20 some of those are leaving with eligibility remaining. A lot of those guys are walkons. NIU's numbers have been higher the last two years as this staff has turned over the roster to their liking, as is the case with any new staff. Also, transfer numbers will likely go up across the board in the new Transfer Portal/one free transfer era.

Well, for about 20 of the 23, it seems that they were told (or realized) that they would be better off playing DII, DIII, or junior college football. Does not seem that they are chasing bigger, better pastures.
That number is not alarmingly high at all when the talent coming in is better than them.

Check out this article on the average number of players per school in the portal.
https://247sports.com/Article/College-fo...166942564/
Quote:The debut portal cycle saw 1,720 players enter, per a source with direct knowledge of the portal. That number retracted to 1,695 in 2019-20. But for this offseason, that number has ballooned to 2,510 with more than one month remaining before the transfer portal annually resets August 1.
These mass exoduses across campuses nationwide – an average of 19.3 players have entered the portal per FBS team, including walk-ons – has led some coaches to sound the alarm bell.

And we are only slightly above that, with a new coaching staff. That doesn't seem too bad.

I mean Hammock was hired after the 2019 recruiting cycle was pretty much over, 2020 was anything but normal... It's really almost more like a year and a half. Besides, until the roster is 100% the current staff's players, I would still consider that a "new" staff. Until that point they are still actively shaping the roster into their vision.
In reality a PWO leaving to go to a FCS, DI, DIII or NAIA school shouldn't really even be considered a "transfer."
Interesting fact I came across. If you take every single player that has left since the day Hammock was hired, and every player that has come into the program since he was hired, there has been the same # of All MAC selections brought in as have played a single FBS snap elsewhere. 3. All MAC = Lafayette, Rudolph, & Gandy. FBS snaps = Heflin, Brinkman, & Harbison.
Gotta figure Kramer & Robinson play snaps at their new schools so add two to that list after this coming season. IMO, there will be a lot more first time All MAC selections for NIU at the end of the season. Just judging by the various publications pre-season lists there could be 2-4 easily.

This roster turn over stuff is kinda out of control. He didn’t inherit a team of baseball players who needed to learn football. If he went 0-6 after the 2013 season would you say - “he needs his players”. NIU should have been no worse than .500 since he took over. Poor coaching due to learning on the job is the reason. Not lack of “his players”

That’s debatable … my intelligence, not the squad talent. So maybe 2020 Hammock probably goes 8-5 with the 2013 squad. I’m just saying he didn’t inherit the worst squad in the Mac. He coached it into the worst by choice. It’s just football politics…he swore it wasn’t a rebuild and NIU would compete right away. Then tore the roster apart so everyone can say - he needs time to rebuild. I get it. Never say you’re rebuilding. He didn’t want to hurt the 9k in attendance to the point it falls to 8,300.

I don't see Dustin Fletcher listed as a QB. I thought maybe I missed something but he's not in the gone from 2020 list either. Is he just one of the others waiting to be listed or did I actually miss something?

He’s on there.
I have a feeling the page is loading weird for some people. Refresh - try a different browser - etc.
Fletcher is the main back up this season. I bet we see him a bunch.
An interesting debate is what you do if Rocky goes down? Let Fletcher start and run it 40 times a game? Let Hampton start? I hear he is already the best passer on the team.
Either way you likely will have to burn a redshirt from one of these guys. Maybe let Yost start or something if you don’t want to burn a shirt. It’s going to be a weird juggle for Hammock.
In my opinion Fletcher would take over. He doesn’t need a redshirt - he got a free one last season. Plus you can take 4 games to give Hampton snaps.
Once you decide you aren’t going to redshirt Fletcher you can use him to take hits away from Rocky. I feel like Fletcher is super important- if he moved on things would get real interesting at QB.
Edit to add: Yost is the only QB we have besides Rocky to complete a pass in a College game. Rocky needs to stay healthy while we work the kids in. I expect all 3 backups to get snaps.

Hammock does not go 8-5 with the 2013 squad, get out of here lol.
I was one of Rod's biggest defenders and I'll even say he had no idea what the hell he was doing the first couple years.
