Goodman on the playoffs (read to the end)
Joe Goodman on how Saban's domination at Alabama led to the expansion of the "playoffs." (And as much as we may hate it, he's probably not wrong.)

https://www.al.com/alabamafootball/2021/...nsion.html

But it's the last paragraph that will raise the most eyebrows:

Quote:Others in college football will try to take credit for this day, but we all know who really made it happen. When UAB makes the College Football Playoff, just thank Nick Saban.

Strange column.

Alabama’s dominance and that of 2-3 other programs made the 4-team playoff detrimental to the sport’s health.

You don’t need another sentence. Especially when Saban’s extension literally has zero to do with the timing. Silly to make that tie when it isn’t even remotely true. Total waste of time and space.

Blah. More interesting would’ve been to actually interview Bill Clark and Gus Malzahn about it, but that might require work or something.

The old rule is "Raise the bridge or lower the water". Since they can't arbitrarily push the perennial powers out of the playoffs, they must find a way to bring in more teams. This does not lessen the chances of the usual power teams from winning the NCAA NC, but it does make it look like they are trying. Do the usual billionaires get tired of being listed as the richest Americans? No, I don't think so -- and neither do winning millionaire coaches tire of winning NCs..

You know, Joe, I'm going to give the credit for that to Bill Clark when that day comes.
