Lingquist has no HC experience and is replacing a coach who won multiple NCs before going to Buffalo.

Not exactly an even trade-off.

Yea it's a shame that there were no multi national championship winning coaches available this time around.

Time will tell with Linguist but it looks like a good hire for a lot of reasons. Especially given the time frame!

Under that rationale, if championship-winning Chuck Martin were hired away and replaced by first-time head coach Brent Venables we'd be making a downgrade as well. Leipold was a solid coach but it's not like he's irreplaceable, or that Lingquist is an automatic head scratcher like Mike Jinks.

RE: UB got themselves a head football coach
Linguist looks really good on paper and the program is making some quality staff hires to replace the guys that went with Leipold to Kansas.
I'm hoping this is a case of reloading not rebuilding. Linguist looks like a guy that moves around often. If he's successful at UB, I'm not expecting him to be around too long...but that's a good problem to have I suppose.

I read somewhere, and thought it was interesting that UB players who were polled before the coaching hire wanted a head coach who was younger. (Lance is 56). Linguist is 37.

The DLine was better in the very short 2020 season. Good luck to Cedric Douglas at Buffalo.

Report that UMass will be losing another coach as Cedric Douglas is headed to Buffalo

Douglas spearheaded most of UMass' JUCO recruiting and was a popular coach among the players

Big difference here is that he comes with ties into the department already. While the AD has changed most of the staff in Alumni Arena knows coach Mo.

An apparent Home Run hire! Mo has electrified my hometown of Ann Arbor with his energy, much like PJ did in Kalamazoo. Considering also that Lance hardly left the cupboard bare of talent and the guy has program history, this is an AD's dream. Bull, one could expect a max of two fabulous seasons before Buffalo sends yet another coach to the P5. Congrats, you have a great program.

This next year may be very rough unless all the portal guys come back.

* We lost two OL to graduation and two to the portal..
* We lost a DL to graduation and two to the portal..

Already three of the six who entered the portal have decided to stay at Buffalo (but officially none of the linemen).

Then there is the matter of replacing virtually the whole staff, 120 days before the season. We now have a coach, oc, and dc. We have four coaches that Lance did not take with him still on staff (no idea if they stay).

Really I would call 6 wins this year a major accomplishment for Linguist but... If the stars line up right with the portal and the hires, I could see 8-10 and pushing for the east.

The thing about Mo is we do not know what kind of a HC he is going to be. He could be great, he could be meh. He's never been in the big chair before.

But, again, if the stars line up, and UB is really good the next 2-3 seasons I expect him to be hired away. He moves around *a lot* and Buffalo has went from "dead end" to "launching pad" over the past dozen years or so between football and hoops.

The MAC does not have the dollars to hire the "sure thing" head coach like Urban Meyer or Jimbo Fisher. Yes he could be a meh. Also you are correct, Mo is not looking to be in Buffalo for as long as Solich has been in Ohio. The MAC's budgetary constraints establish it as a launch pad for those aspiring to seven figure salaries for sure, witness the aforementioned Coach Meyer.

At the end of the day, Power 5 high potential assistants evaluate MAC coaching openings on the potential success of the program, Mo would never have listened to EMU. Chuck Martin took a pay cut to go to Miami simply because he wants to have a Power 5 HC job and Miami presented him with an opportunity to flourish.

The good news for you is that Buffalo has become the "new Toledo". The UT job propelled Saban, Pinkel, Beckman and Campbell to success at major Universities, the only bad hire in the recent past was when they tapped a guy who wanted to truly stay at Toledo. Having head coaches poached by larger programs is indeed a good problem to have.

Just saw that six probable UB starters are headed to Kansas. Not surprising Leipold wanted them there—UB was better than KU. It’s a talent upgrade for them.

Yep, good luck Lance with all your UB recruits vs. Oklahoma, Texas, Okla St., Iowa St, etc.. Hope you all enjoy no Bowl games.

UB has gained 3 commitments tonight: a DL transfer from Texas A&M, CB from Texas Tech and a JUCO LB who played his freshman year at Kentucky. Looks like Mo is working hard to replace what was lost.

It's the etcetera where they might hope to win a few games. Win their FCS buy game, two Go5 buy games, go 2-7 in the Big12, why, there's the thrill of "maybe they get to go to a bowl game" until the last game or two of the season!

Sure, they won't go, but Kansas is one of the few jobs in the country where a coach could win 12 games in their first three years and have people saying, "well, he definitely is an improvement!"

Kansas and Bowling Green are the only two places that would be seen as an improvement.

Lessee, not counting 2020, Rutgers has 7 wins 2017-2019, tOOSU (the Other OSU) in the Pacific Northwest had 9, but yeah, a lot of the "usual suspects" for lackluster P5 performance clear the hurdle easily when it's set that low.
