So many years, the #13 seed/CUSA team has upset the blue blood in the first round. Of course, then there's ODU/JJ who broke this trend. but still. maybe the committee throws a little respect at C-USA next year? (we all know they wont)
ODU was a 14 seed and that Purdue team was really good. They lost in a miracle finish to UVA in the elite 8.
I’m with ya, man! I wish we played this years Purdue team. That point guard we faced was a volume shooter and could drop 40 on ya. This Purdue team was all frosh and overrated. Oh well. We’ll back in the NCAAs in 10 more years and can reminisce then.
Yeah, ODU has a ways to go before they are NCAA Tournament worthy. Right now they are probably no better than the 6th or 7th best team in VA. I hope they can make it back to the NCAAs in the next 10 years. It would also be nice if they are good enough to have a legitimate chance to win when they do go back. Twice under Blaine's time at ODU when they played in the Tourney (Notre Dame in New Orleans and Butler in D.C.) I went and both times felt that ODU was as good or better than their opponent was. Didn't feel that way in their last trip to the Tourney against Purdue a few years ago.
Virginia, VCU, Virginia Tech. Then who? I presume Richmond but it's not like they've been much if any better over the past 10 or 20 years, 2011 Sweet 16 run notwithstanding. Liberty? Good on them for winning an NCAA game two years ago and giving Oklahoma State a fight today, but they've largely feasted on garbage. W&M beats ODU more than they should but they've still never seen an NCAA bid. JMU won the CAA but lost to Norfolk State this season and have been nowhere for the past 25 years.
So who's your five or six that ODU looks hopelessly up to?
LOL - "Looks hopelessly up to"???
I highlighted for you the key part that you seem to have overlooked. "Right now" means today - as in after this season that just ended (for ODU).
It's really not that hard to see the basis of my comment -
2021 NCAA TOURNAMENT
1) UVA
2) VA TECH
3) VCU
4) LIBERTY
2021 NIT
5) RICHMOND
That's 5 schools rated above ODU this season achievement wise and 4 of the 5 got invitations to the tournaments which shows the NCAA thought more of them than they did ODU.
In Virginia the NET ratings this season for some of the D1 teams are -
12 UVA
37 VCU
48 VA Tech
68 Richmond
86 Liberty
130 GMU
133 ODU
137 JMU
ODU placed 7th on that list of Virginia schools.
Also for comparison, the NET ratings this season for some of the CUSA schools are -
59 North Texas (NCAA Tournament)
76 LA Tech (NIT)
81 WKU (NIT)
83 UAB (NIT backup)
88 Marshall (NIT backup)
133 ODU
169 UTSA
183 FAU
187 Rice
With North Texas, WKU, and LA Tech all winning post season games, I assume that their NET ratings are even better now than what is shown above. Judging by the NET list above, the NCAA also rated ODU as no better than the 6th best team this season in CUSA as well.
