Checking in on folks from Houston (or Texas)
We didn't have power for 36 hours, got it back for now but rolling blackouts are likely the next few days. The state of Texas is a huge mess right now with power and water.

I kind of wonder if we'll be back to normal by the weekend even. Weather wise, we'll be fine but if power and water are iffy, I doubt we'll be playing any sporting events.

Hope everyone else is fine.

eta - my math sucks when I'm cold. Not sure if our rolling blackouts will continue or not - numbers finally seem to be improving in Texas.

Even if the field is clear of snow, I can't see them playing baseball on Friday in 27 degree weather. The risk of injury (especially to pitchers) is too great.

It's not quite that bad. Current forecast for Friday at 6pm is 39F, dropping to 34F by 10 pm. Still too cold for baseball IMO, but not 27F.

FWIW-Plenty of Patriot League, NEC, MAAC, etc. teams play a game or two a season with temps in the 30’s... So wouldn’t be unprecedented from that perspective.

But the concerns with power and water are definitely a bigger deal.

Sat through too many early season mid-30s, sometimes with mist and drizzle, games when my son was playing club and HS baseball. No thanks!

I do agree with Walt’s comment about injury concerns and your comments and power and water, the later of which will likely cause the postponement of at least the Friday games. I wonder if Washington is already here?

Now over 48 hours with no power, thus no heat. I have no interest in going out to see either the Friday or Saturday games. Anyone need tickets.

We lost power for 29 hours, got down to 47F in the house. Power back now since Tuesday morning. We are supposed to start having some rolling brownouts when the second storm comes through tomorrow or Friday.

We are on the little tongue of Entergy that reaches into Texas and is not part of ERCOT. I can truly say that this is the first time I've ever been glad that I am on Entergy and not ERCOT.

Things improving for me. I have had power 28.33 of the last 30 hours, a reversal of the previous ratios. Too late for my water - well is frozen up at the wellhead and water between me and the wellhead has drained or frozen, so no water for toilets, bathing, washing dishes, laundry, etc. Now that I have power to make coffee, short on water. Well guy will come out ASAP, which will be no earlier than Saturday and perhaps as late as Wednesday, and we shall see if it will cost me $1K or $20K to restore water. My ex-wife has said I can come shower at her place, if I can get there.

Thresher article indicates that because of the power outages, there was a number of Moderna vaccines that would have gone to waste because of the power outages. At the last second, a number of Rice students, staff and faculty were able to get vaccines as a result.

So that's one piece of good news from the deep freeze.

That sounds promising. Great movies have been made, based upon less story-line than that.

No great movie, unless you you want to count the family cruise to Mexico my daughter-in-law sponsored some years back in which both my ex and my girl friend were participants. everybody got along fine.

Divorced now 37 years, all issues and problems have faded into the dim mists of memory.

UPDATE | All home athletics events at Rice scheduled for Friday, February 19 have been postponed.
Quote:All home athletics events at Rice scheduled for Friday, February 19 have been postponed as a result of the recent winter storms. Officials are currently evaluating the feasibility of hosting events scheduled for the remainder of the weekend. An update on the schedule will be provided Friday at 12:00 p.m.

Rice was set to open the 2021 baseball season on Friday and well as host Marshall in men's basketball for the first of two games. Per my Weather Channel app, Spring Branch, TX (northern Comal County) has had 7.2" of snow today and another 2.1" forecast this afternoon.

"2nd largest snowfall this week" are not words I ever expected to be using with respect to Comal County. The good news, we have utilities back, and it's 30F (rather balmy compared to beginning of the week) with highs in the 50s this weekend. Come on sunshine!

Everyone stay warm and safe!

Checking in on folks from Houston (or Texas)
We fared relatively well considering so many lost power and potable water.

2 holes in the ceiling, one from a roof leak where the ice got behind a chimney flashing, and the other from a copper pipe that froze and burst out in the garage.

I didn’t even know there was a water line to our garage (was set up for a fridge).

We’ll be doing the drywall repair this weekend.

RE: Checking in on folks from Houston (or Texas)
I was without power from Monday evening until late Wednesday night. My indoor temperatures got down to 31. I have never been so happy to be woken up by somebody turning on the lights in my bedroom. Water went out Wednesday morning from a pipe busted on the floor below my apartment. Plumbers didn't even arrive at the complex until yesterday afternoon, and there were so many problems that they haven't even started on my building, yet. Luckily an old roommate got his water yesterday and let me grab a shower last night, and HEB is running a tight enough ship that I could restock on drinking water this morning.
