I didn't need that mandated to me.

Had no choice if I wanted anything extra. Single mom, dad rarely in the picture. Dirt poor. You know, white privilege.

Government has no business mandating anything like this.

Not necessarily mandating but changing the structure.

Instead of going to school K - 12 for 9 months a year, go to school K - 10, 12 months a year.

Then in 11th grade, you go to school part time to get general studies, and then opt into some other program, your choice. If you want to learn about cars, opt into a program that teaches you about cars. If you want to learn about the law, opt into a program that teaches you about the law. Whatever you want to focus your next two years on, the school provides those resources.

Currently, those without financial means and transportation are stuck in a failing system and mostly those with wealth and means are taking advantage of the really beneficial programs out there for older high school studets

Its an obvious pipe dream in modern America.

I doubt kids will ever sit in a class room together 7 hours a day 5 days a week again. Covid has ended all that and its not coming back in public education.

Unemployment rates are gong to be sky high from now on as well.

The pre covid world is gone forever and its not coming back.

My kids are going 5 days a week now.

Most are not, and you know this. Even when they do attend 5 days its often not a full day in a full class.

So lets not try and pretend this is not a massive problem a full year now into this pandemic.

"Just a few weeks to flatten the curve"

Meanwhile most kids across the nation have lost a full year of education and are a full year behind now with no end in sight, but yours go 5 days so hurrah!

German parents accept the tracking.

In the USA parents of average intelligence and below average intelligence would never accept Johnny or Susie being tracked into VoTech instead of college prep. Until Americans understand and accept that every child is not college material and that the trades are more respected a plan for tracking kids will not work.

Image the left's outrage when certain groups are not getting selected at the same rates as other groups...the horror

Luckily, my daughter is in a high school program that upon graduation she'll already have an associates degree to go along with the high school diplomna. Now, for my son, I have no idea how this will play out.

A LOT of kids now do dual enrollment. You can get college credit from a community college while you are in high school.

Some people, especially those wanting to go to elite colleges, prefer to stick with HS AP or IB classes. But others can get as much as a full year of college free while in high school.

My daughter will get up to 2 years of college reduced (not free as the HS program has a fee) but substantially below what two years of college will cost. We ran the numbers given the cost per credit hour and she's going to save me $25k-$30k. I think the HS course is maybe $1k. It's a no brainer, IMO.
