10 Years Later (and Still Going) McNair v. NCAA

Kind of a crazy story, and yet another example of ineffectiveness that the NCAA continues to display. It has spent over $10 million in legal fees fighting a case that could have been settled for a fraction of that. The evidence against McNair very much appeared thin at best, but the NCAA charged him with lying to investigators and ended his career in college coaching.

A big what if - if Reggie Bush scandal doesn't get uncovered, does Pete Carroll stay at USC? And if he stays at USC, does Alabama, with Saban, still go on its historic run. Would have been incredible to see a Saban/Carroll national championship game in the 2010s. What would have become of the Seahawks too?

Well, while USC had excellent teams the last few years of Caroll's tenure, after 2005 they never got back to the national championship game, so it is hard to see how they would have competed with a Saban run that started in 2009, IMO.

Also, as a former NFL head coach before USC, he was IMO an NFL guy first, so I think it inevitable that he would try the NFL again.

I don’t know, Quo. Carroll’s USC teams finished top-5 in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Even the 2009 team, which was his last at USC, had a top-5 recruiting class come in. And 2009 team beat Ohio State at OSU. They were very much an elite program upon his departure.

Good call on McNair returning to the NFL, but it still is unfortunate that he appeared to be blacklisted for very little wrong doing. More coaches have been rehired for far worse allegations.

We don't necessarily disagree. Carroll's USC teams were elite until the very end. But, to face Alabama and possibly stop them from winning a title, they would have had to have been top-two elite, in order to make the BCS title game. And they never were that, not after 2005. We know that for a fact because that's what happened.
